Perfume Policy?

Does anyone have a policy where they work addressing employees wearing perfumes, scented lotions, or having plug-ins for their work areas? I know that many people with asthma or migraines are "set off" by strong scents and our Patient Safety Committee is looking into a policy banning the use of perfumes and scented lotions as well as those "gagging":o bathroom atomizers. (Body odor can bring tears to your eyes but doesn't cause asthma attacks!:icon_roll) Does anyone have a policy they'd be willing to share so I don't have to re-invent the wheel?

Every unnecessary "frangrance" needs to be banned. Deodorant, nail polish, lipstick, hair care products, dryer sheets and detergents, and may more products are really awful when one is allergic to them. Out of courtesy for others, they should not have any place around coworkers, certainly not around sick people. Even scented inks, some food smells, cleaning products - all can be miserable for the allergic.

While I have not worked in a hospital as a nurse, I have worked in the restaurant industry. When I worked at Applebee's, we were not suppose to wear perfume. The reasoning? Not because of patrons who may be allergic to it. The customers are suppose to smell the food, not your perfume. :icon_roll

We are supposed to be "scents senstive" and are asked not to wear perfume, use scented lotions etc while at work. Of course, some people ignore this and wear perfume anyway!:icon_roll

I think it makes sense (no pun intended!).

Now, if we can only make the smokers smell better!

I have no problem with no perfume or scented lotions, but PLEASE don't ban deodorants!

I am so sensitive to perfume-I get terrible headaches. One nurse I used to work with would wear the STRONGEST perfume I ever smelled. I really liked her, she was a nice person. I eventually HAD to say something to her. She toned it down. At my facility they ask us not to wear it. It makes sense. I have always said, the best smelling people smell like nothing at all.

I think it's a reasonable policy. Yes. The smokers. I hope they don't forget the smokers in the policy.

Not supposed to wear perfume in ER....people are sick and do not need this to make it worse. We have had people asked to wash off their perfume if a complaint is made.

Maisy;)

My facility has banned all unnecessary "smells" for patient comfort.

They've also banned any form of tobacco product for employees, patients, & visitors. There is no more going outside for a smoke break and patients can't be wheeled out by a family member for a quick smoke. If an employee leaves the hospital grounds for lunch and comes back smelling like smoke, they are sent home. If a visitor is seen smoking in our parking lot, the security guard asks them to leave.

It's pretty strict, but the other 2 hospitals in close proximity have done the same thing.

As someone with terrible allergies I like the idea of banning strong perfumes and body lotions. Deodorant however needs to remain in place. lol

I definately agree with the deodorant part. I have never dealt with a policy with perfume, but with the nails and and one place you weren't aloud to smoke on hospital property period, so no smoking.

I gave up all of that when, I became a nurse. I am a so called smoker, but I don't do it at work, because I don't want people to smell it. I wish I could wear all the pretty nail polish colors on my finger nails. So I do the toes instead. Perfume, I just wear it when I go out. I don't have to spend the extra money to worry about buying the stuff either.

I am currently a nursing student, and even at school we are not supposed to wear scented deodorant or perfumes. I personally think that getting rid of deodorant is a bad idea...body odors are gross!! But banning perfumes is another thing, and I think that is ok!!
