Recommendations for Second Degree BSN Programs

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

Published

I live in Bucks County, have my BS and am looking to go into Nursing. I have found that , Villanova, La Salle and Thomas Jefferson have programs. Does anyone have a recommendation as to any of these programs or any others in the area? I would appreciate the help. Also, Gwyned Mercy has a weekend program for two years that would allow me to take the test to be an RN but would only give me an Associates in Nursing. Does anyone know whether it would be the same as having my BS and being an RN or is there a difference in having your BS and BN? Thanks for any help!!!

can u also send me the information about the scholarship program from U of Penn

Hello all,

I am also attending in Spring 2010  . Hiddencat, would you mind forwarding me the information regarding the UPenn scholarship as well?

acrawl- I will need your email address, which you can't post here. IIRC, you need 5 posts in order to be able to pm, so as soon as you can pm me your email address I'll be happy to forward it to you. Same goes for anyone else- pm me your email address with a note about wanting the HUP scholarship info.

Thanks for the response hiddencat, I will pm my email address. But I also wanted some advice as to whether you or anyone else thinks it's a good idea to sign your life away for 4 years to work in a dept you may end up not being so fond of? I've been trying to exhaust all of the pros and cons of a deal like HUP is offering and just wanted any ideas or thoughts from others...

I thought 4 years was too long. I didn't apply for that reason. In the info it says it's possible to transfer with permission to another department (in a big MAYBE sorta way) but if you leave for any reason before the full 4 years are up you owe them the entire amount back- no prorating at all. A lot can happen in 4 years that might necessitate leaving the area- family stuff, Philly sucking in general, locusts, etc. When you do the math, it's essentially 10K a year, and my husband makes that at his second job as a paramedic, which is a much lower pay grade than an RN.

That being said, if you want to work for the UPHS, once you get their money they are going to do whatever they can to get you a job to be able to get back their investment. If they can't find anything anywhere for you, you're released from the contract and don't have to repay anything.

But I felt that if I was going to be owned by someone for 4 years, I'd rather join the military. I already had my loans out for this year, so I decided to just work with the debt.

Thanks hiddencat, we share the same thoughts on that idea. Its just that the deal sounds so good because I just hate the idea of more loan debt piling up. Question for you interms of loans, did you have problems finding private loans to pay for the program? Did your credit weigh heavily on your approval? Did you need a cosignor? And how long before you started did you began to secure loans? I start in March and haven't started looking yet. Is that bad? Sorry to bombard you with so many questions, but getting prepared for this program is just driving me somewhat crazy:bugeyes:. And that is why it would be so easy for me to just wash my hands of the financial side of things with regard to this program and go for a deal like HUP is offering.

I talked to the guy about the the scholarship and he informed me that it would not be offered for any other class because it was a one time thing. I guess they h ad extra money in 2009 budget and needed to get rid of the money ASAP!

Are you talking about the HUP scholarship howard1913 or the Robert Woods Foundation Scholarship? I thought the Robert Woods Foundation Scholarship was based on grant funding not HUP. Who were you able to speak too?

I am talking about the HUP scholarship that was offered to students.

Darn...Who did you speak with? Someone referenced in the email hiddencat forwarded you?

yes the man name on the application..we spoke and email each other and he said it would not be offered. He is really good with responding to his email so if you want to email him you can. Yeah so I wanted to know before i got excited so now i am working on PLAN D. Plan A was me getting a loan Plan B was cosigner (which i dont have) Plan C was that scholarship and now Plan D which i dont know. I am currently working on my credit so that i would not need a cosigner.

yeah that definitely sucks. I also need to start looking into loans ASAP. Are you starting in March?
