Pediatric New Graduate Internship Programs?

I am graduating in December and I am looking for childrens hospitals, or peds units, that have new graduate internship programs. If the hospital you work at has a program, or if you know if one, please list it here. Also, if you have any advice for getting into these programs that would be great too. Thanks!

I would not recommend Children's National at all. I have worked there and I thought it was worst places to work because of hostile management.

FNP45 can you elaborate more on what exactly you mean by hostile management. CNMC is the biggest children hospital in the area and would be my dream job. Are you referring to certain units have terrible managment or Children National as a whole? Thanks

I am referring to Medical unit there. I worked for 4 years and survived but could not take it anymore and many of my coworkers felt harassed as well and left. I do not have much experience with other units but their ICUs share the same reputation. It is a very cliquish place. Either you belong their or you do not. Depending on your race, color etc. you will be accepted or rejected.

I felt the tension at the very onset but decided to stay and learn and build my resume.

FNP45,

Your experience at Children's National seems to be similiar to mine. I came in as an experienced peds RN and was shocked by the cliquish behavior, lack of concern for patient care (by RN's/techs/and doctors alike), the "it's not my patient" mentality. I came to CNMC from a Top 10 children's hospital and found CNMC to be very behind when it came to their treatment plans too (ie using 70/30 insulin instead of Novolog). The pay and benefits CNMC offered were amazing, along with the nurse-to-pt ratios, so I tried to stick it out, but after 5 months I had enough and left. I have no regrets, and wish I would have left sooner. I still live in the area, but know when I have kids they will never be treated here. I will not trust my kids to the care of CNMC.

Wow!! Thanks so much for giving me your 100% opinion. I've read in other threads that Children's management was horrible but wouldn't go into further detail. Thanks again foryour explaination. Ill definitely take it into consideration.

Do you have recommendations in other hospitals w/ Peds?

Are you still in Peds?

Wow. I feel I should have left years ago. After I left that place I definitely have realized sometimes the grass is greener on the other side in reality.

Even though where I work now is not as big of a paymaster I feel happier and I feel like I work with real people, nurses and doctors who care about their patients. Management is more hand on, they jump in in patient care as well rather than sitting in their offices and trying to decide who to pick on...

I think Georgetown has a very good Pediatric division. I would try there. I have never worked there but my friends who have liked it there.

I agree with ChristineN, I will avoid taking my kids to CNMC as well.

See my post in page #1 of this thread where I talk about options at INOVA and Georgetown. If you are in Maryland you can also look into UMaryland or John Hopkins. Also, there is Hospital for Sick Children, a pediatric rehab facility in DC.

Thanks again FNP45 and ChristineN! I guess things are never what it seems! I have an interview coming up for peds unit at John Hopkins but because of distance and not so good pay I had my eyes set at Childrens. Now, I'll definitely have a lot to consider.

I'm glad to hear you guys are happy and content outside of CNMC. You guys have my respect. Sometimes we can be blinded by the $$$ that we forget self perservation and happiness are worth much much more!

Any other advice and recommedations will truly be appreciated!

I will add that I also work at CNMC, almost 2.5 years now, While I have not worked elsewhere to compare, I have been happy here. I won't stay forever but that is because I relocated here and would like to go home someday.

Just want to get your insight, but what has made CNMC enjoyable for you?!
