Pedi Math and rounding

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

Hello,

When answering a pedi math question on the NCLEX test, what is the correct way to round the number? for example, 87lbs = 39.5454 kg. Would rounding down to 39 be appropriate, to avoid giving too much? In school we were taught to round to the nearest hundredth with pediatrics, but friends who've taken the exam already, said NCLEX asks for whole numbers only.

any input would be great, i posted this someplace else, but i'm not getting any replies.

oh and I know how to round numbers, just curious if it's the same rule for peds.

Any help would be appreciated.

No Actually that would be 40kg because you look at the next number to the 9 which is a 5 and when the next number is 5 and above this gives you the next number which is forty. You also have to consider the significant figures at this point you only have 2 because of the 87 if you had like 87.5 this would give you the sig.fig. of 3 and your answer would be different you would need 3 numbers in your answer. If you need more help welcome to ask me. Or if you need more explaining just ask.

Good Luck! Math is hard. :banghead:

So, to answer my question with rounding, it is the same rule for pedi meds as it is for adults?

Each situation is going to be different, it depends on the med being given, etc. For pressors, where pumps are more sensitive, you will see one decimal point used.

Figure on just one decimal point and you will be just fine.

OK, Thank you. :nuke:

I just took the NCLEX on Wednesday (I passed BTW..yay!). I had one pedi dosing question and the questions told you exacly how many decimal places it wanted it rounded to. As an example, my question ended with "Round to one decimal place'

Hope that helps.

Thanks, that does help. I guess i'm just worrying too much about it. I take my nclex tuesday. So, i'll just do what it asks! Thanks again.

Christine
