PDA's

Nursing Students General Students

Published

Hi everyone,

I am starting nursing school in January and I was wondering how many students use PDA's. I asked Santa for one but I wanted to see how popular they were on this board. Do you find that you use the PDA all the time or is it something that sits in the drawer (SP?) I know some students use them for pharmacology but what else do you use them for?

Anyway, just curious to see how new students use technology to help them in their studies.

Thanks so much for the info.

Sue,

I am looking into the sony clie, as a matter of fact, I gave Santa an ad from Staples while he was eating breakfast this a.m., I have a feeling that Santa may have already put one is his bag for me. I don't know what model it is though. FYI, Staples has the Sony Clie sj22 for 119.98 and it comes with a free case.

Thanks again and I'm sure you'll be hearing from me when I start learning how to use the PDA.:D

FYI on the Clie SJ22

It's also at amazon.com for $130.00 with a $30 MIR (rebate is good until the end of Feb)

Don't know anything about that model..... just wanted to pass on the price.... it's possible that the price *could* go lower, and it would still have the MIR.....

I am *very* undecided but definately want a PDA - I'm waiting for now - I just can't decide!

Hi I am so glad you posted here because I am in desperate need of your expertise. I am about to graduate and want a PDA to keep medical software, fitness software and other miscellaneous stuff. I don't really need wordprocessing capability. So I guess I have 2 questions...

1. How much memory do I need?

2. Sounds like you favor Sony over Palm Tungsten- do you get more bang for the buck with SONY IYHO?

Thank you so much...

Nope, don't favor Sony over Palm. In fact I usually stay away from Sony, normally too pricey. I actually had my eye on the Palm Tungsten E, but $99 for the Clie was a great price.

Whatever PDA you get, get one with a memory slot (Secure Digital or Memory Stick are most common). Memory Stick is only found in Sony, they love to be proprietary. New PC's have all the slots, SD, MS anc CF (compact flash) as well as xD (dig. camera card).

Go color screen they'ver really come down in price.

Staples has the Sony Clie sj22 for 119.98 and it comes with a free case.
Is that before the rebate? Or are they figuring the rebate in? If its before rebate, that is a steal. If it includes the rebate its o.k. (I buy PDA accesories on Ebay. I got a brand new Clie case for $4.99 (retails for $39.99).

Here's the rule of thumb when buying PC stuff. Hardware (like PC's & PDA's are sold near, at, or below cost. They're counting on making the money on the accessories. So, while I wouldn't buy a PDA on ebay (won't get much better price anyway because they're sold so close to cost) I buy accessories there. Like I bought a $30 battery charger/adapter (has 4 double aa's) for $6.99. This way if my battery quits during class, I'm not sunk.

The price is after the rebate is applied. Still not bad though. It is amazing what you can get on Ebay, I use Ebay for all my cell phone supplies, etc.

Okay everyone, now that I know I'm getting a PDA, how about some links to some of your favorite websites for PDA's.

http://www.Palmgear.com rocks!! They have just about everything, from freeware to shareware. You can search by category, rating, price, etc.

I have downloaded a great weight training program from there, a budget program, a shopping program, and a bunch more I can't think of right now.

http://www.Epocrates.com is a great FREE drug database. No, it does not have nursing considerations, but if you are poor like me and can't afford to buy a drug program, this one is great. My pharmacology instructor is also an NP and she uses Epocrates.

http://www.skyscape.com is a good site to check out as well. There is a lot of medical/nursing programs to download.

If I can find the other sites I have used, I will post them for you.

Good luck!!

Has anybody tried the Taber's Medical Dictionary on their pda?

RNnTraining 1973, which keyboard did you get on ebay? There are so many kinds, and I just wish I could see them all laid out in front of me so I'd know which ones are clunky, too small, too flimsy etc. Does yours require batteries, or does it run off the pda? Does it have a slot for a mouse?

One more question for everybody. Does anybody feel like a complete dork pulling out their keyboard in class and typing away, or this becoming a mainstream thing (not that I have to run with the crowd, cuz I don't!!! Just wondering). My husband started laughing at me when I told him my plan to take notes during lectures by typing using my palm. He thinks it's distracting to others when people do that during meetings at his workplace. Are there other people using laptops, and so on during your lectures?

I just think it would be so cool to be able to infrared-beam notes back and forth between other student's handhelds, so I hope to encourage my buds at school to get one.

My friend has Taber's on hers and as soon as I can afford it, I will be putting it on mine. I have the Logitech folding keyboard. It folds up in half and runs off the PDA. There is no slot for the mouse.

My husband calls me a computer geek when I pull mine out!!!! :D

Does anyone else have a Toshiba e310? I tried to get a keyboard for it last Christmas but the one that is advertised as fitting Toshiba's only works with the e330. Just wondering if anyone out there has found a keyboard that is compatible with the 310?
