PCCTI LPN School?

U.S.A. Illinois

Published

Hi

I have been doing research about LPN schools and employment. I came across a school name PCCTi located in Chicago or Oakbrook. Anyone gone there to do there program? Please tell me any information about this school? Was it a challenging program? I appreciate anyone who can help me out here. Need to make some decisions but would love to know from someone who actually took the classes.

Thank you and have a good day!!

I am a little discouraged also but am also aware that there are students that hate many programs. Everyone has a different opinion and what I am really curious to know is if the students are prepared for the NCLEX-PN.

As a current student, and i am paying 16,000 for a self study course. If they had told me that there would be no orgainzation, and I would be learning to be come a nurse on my own, I would have gone to another school! We have not had any lab time ( we you learn your skills) since March, and we are in our last 10 week of the class. Some students went to clinical sites where they we never allow to pass medication, and basicly do CNA work. They have yet to have any hands on pratice, and about to sit for boards. Out of 30 students, 10 of us are passing. It not matter of not liking the program, im just not getting what I'm paying for. :scrying:

I sincerely believe they bit off more than they can chew. I attend Oakton at present and they are far more organized and professional. This school is very loosely run and the conversation is likened to what you would have in the company of close friends. A lot of money is passing hands and the school markets itself to low income persons that can qualify for government funding. The remaining population pay exorbitant fees for an unproven program in my opinion. Other options exist in the city and quicker may not be better in this case. I would advise that you investigate the school further, in particular the staff turnover and student completion rates.

Hey guys, has anyone heard of Americare Institute? A friend of mine wants to go to one of their information sessions. She said they have a location in Schaumburg. I wonder how they compare with other private schools. Just curious if anyone has done a research on all of the private LPN programs -kind of want to know the good and the bad. Thanks.

I would also like to know more about the private LPN schools around. I know that there is a LONG waiting list at just about every community college and I'm unwilling to wait any longer. What's PCCTI's NCLEX pass rate? Are there any other private schools anyone has had experience with and recommend? How about specific school I should stay away from? Any info would be great! Thanks!

Hello ladies...

I just wanted to make a comment about PCCTI. I recently went to the oak brook campus for a job interview. This program has had a total haul over the last months. A new DON was hired who has much experience and is trying to revamp the program. Because of the improvements she is trying to make, everything is still adjusting. It is a relatively new program...but they are improving what was once a not so great situation. (The same can be said for a lot of nursing schools). Also, please take into consideration that nursing school is very stressful, and will always require independent study to get the material down. When I was in my undergraduate program I often felt the same way...like I was getting no assistance. You are presented with the material, but generally it is up to you to absorb it and really really get it down. Nursing programs are definitely not spoon fed-anywhere. Some people have better clinical experiences or enjoy a teacher's teaching style a little better than anothers but that can be expected anywhere.

Also, as for the clinical circumstances. Even in my RN clinicals we did basically CNA things. This is because you are working under someone else's license and it is up to the discretion of that nurse what she will allow you to do. I do agree that at one point meds should be allowed to be given with supervision just so you can get the experience...but honestly, with most clinical sites being nursing homes now days...there is not much else to do (with the exception of customer service, hygiene matters, and wound care).

Well, sorry for the long post but good luck ladies. It will be a challenge no matter what school you attend. Nursing school is NO JOKE!

Has anyone had any updates with this school?I might check them out next week.

Hi All,

I thought I'd leave an update as I've been in the program for awhile now.

I have heard a lot of things positive and negative from the earlier classes at PCCTI (the first is about to graduate so there isn't a guage yet for the nclex). I can definetely tell you that I haven't been happy with everything, the admin's attitude is very poor and very often teeming with contempt for the students I haven't figured out why but whatever. Maybe they are stressed I don't know. I'm at the Oak Brook campus and we have a lab- it's medium sized and has all the necessary tools. There's sort of a battle going on now with students wanting more instructors in the lab- right now there's a lot of chaos with instructors trying to do skill check off and not a lot of eyes to watch/assist them.

The instructors are fantastic. Really. If it weren't for the 2/3 we have I'd probably hit the road and be back to applying for RN programs.

I think the main things to take into consideration (and something I KEEP reminding myself of) is they are a new program and a lot of nursing programs are disorganized- even ones that have been around a million years.

I'm a little disgruntled but over all keeping the faith that they will pull thru. I do feel (even though it's only been 2 months) that I'm being well prepared for the nclex.

Hi Z's Mom,

Ok lets see... They don't accept financial aid because they aren't a college or university- they are a private vocational school. The class setting (in my situation ) is about 30 students to 1 instructor during theory (typical classroom) the lab should be 1:10 but it hasn't worked out that way. We were told this week the other instructors were given the ok to come to lab to assist so we are assuming for the big labs we will be 2:30 or 3:30. It depends on which program you take but they do offer a wide variety of options for days/times. I know there's Mon- Thursday morning programs, Monday- Thursday evening programs, and weekend programs. As of right now they do not have a student pass rate. Their first class is graduating in a few weeks. They do require all of their LPN students to take the HESI exam every month to see where they are and then they also take the HESI Exit which is an extremely difficult test, but it amply prepares you for the NCLEX. As of Friday 10 people had taken the HESI 4 failed 2 got over 1000 (passing is 850) (of course this is just what we are hearing in the halls etc) You'll have 3 chances to take the HESI before you're required to take the whole year all over. As I said above- there have been moments where I've wanted to leave (mostly because of the administration and their lack of assistance and rude attitude) but I keep reminding myself that 1. the instructors are good 2. the education and content are on par with what friends have learned in their first year of adn. 3. push yourself- be on top of your class read every single thing they tell you to read and the stuff they don't- then when you go to a community college for your adn you can show that you busted your butt!! Hope this helps- you can pm me for specifics.

One other thing- the "counselors" there are notorious for giving out false information so make sure you ask each question twice and get it in writing. If they tell you, that you need to take ANY pre reqs make sure you take them at a community college and not there. My friend was told in front of me that the A&P would transfer to a college and after she enrolled she found out that wasn't true.
