PCC/MHCC/CCC Portland Fall 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi everyone, I thought I would start a thread for all the applicants of the Portland, OR area that applied to the schools above. Who else applied ? :)

I applies to all 3 and am waiting for the hear about the 1st round around the middle to end of March. Fingers crossed, hope to make some new contacts, good luck everyone!

You don't have to go to a CC and pay that much. I did a small private class in Vancouver that was $1000 (still a lot) and i only did it because Clark requires it and i didn't get in, so I feel your pain lol.

Have you thought of doing EMT instead? I found it SO much easier to get a job that i actually enjoyed compared to CNA.

Are you an EMT? How was the program? I am a CNA but it's not necessarily something I enjoy. I wish I would have looked into EMT to have a job during nursing school.

PCC in the fall qtr!

Gonna try for PCC and OHSU again next yr. I am a bit sad for having to pay 2k bucks just to have a better shot at nirsing school

I agree with @hallynn, I went to caregiver training institute and did majority of it online besides lab/clinicals, it was around $1200. It does suck to spend that much to have a better chance but I think having my CNA helped me get my interviews for different schools and also gave me a lot to talk about in my interviews, which helps.

I was for a bit and then worked as an ER tech.

I was lucky enough to do an EMT program through a local fire department so my experience was probably a little different than others, but I LOVED it! I looked forward to class every day and was so excited about it. I got a job right away with a private ambulance company and it was really fun. Tons of experience and it was pretty awesome getting to be on scene with the fire department and police. If you're thinking of doing ER, ICU or trauma I'd definitely recommend trying out EMT first. When i ended up in the ED, that's when I really found my passion for nursing. I feel like jobs as a CNA are pretty grueling and demanding, and in a certain setting that isn't enjoyable at all.

Thank you all for the advice. I will look for alternative, cheaper CNA programs in the area. I dont think EMT is for me though, too much adrenaline

I second all of that! Blood, guts, compound fractures, vomit, pee, you name it. EMT's get some wildly good hands on experience. It really tests how you handle and react in high stress situations. You'll find out quick if your hand will stay steady when it needs to be. I ran somewhere around 800 medical calls as a firefighter/EMT and I will tell you, there isn't much I haven't seen. Literally a story for every occasion. Hey Hallynn, which ambulance company did you work for and where?
