Does an RN ALWAYS have to transport a patient receiving a cont. epidural, PCA, or regional block

Specializes in Neuro ICU and Med Surg.

At the facilities I worked at no I didn't have to transport pt with PCA. If the pt was going where PCA cannot be taken with such as MRI then we would stop PCA and medicate with a one time pain med. But no working Med Surg I didn't have to accompany pt with PCA's.

I cannot answer regarding a Epidural, regoinal block since I have very little experience with those pts and they didn't have to leave the unit.

At the med/surg floor I worked at in the midwest - no, transport didn't have to be done by an RN (except in special cases i.e. post-op transfer from PACU to floor. Transporting crashing/difficult patient from floor to ICU etc.)

cheers,

In my area of WC WI we do not need an RN to transport a pt with a pca within a facility. When pts are being transported from our hospital to another facility with the pca the RN must go along.... more for accountabilty than for any other reason.
