Pay Rate

U.S.A. California

Published

I was just wondering what the pay rate in So. Cali would be? I am an RN with 3 years of experience working in a major NYC hospital. Currently our pay rate is $38/hr as a base rate even for new graduates. Is the Cali pay rate comparable? Also what is a typical nurse to patient ratio on a med surg floor? THanks!

I think it depends on what you think is "doable". I live in the Bay Area... East Bay Area. Tri-Valley to be exact. If you look in areas like Hayward, Oakland, San Leandro, Berkeley where crime is rising, then yeah the rent/home prices are not that bad. But if you want to live in a safer town with good schools for your kids (if you have any), then you are looking at least $500k for a decent 3 bed, 2 bath, 1400 sq ft+, with a yard place.

At least 500K for a 3 bedroom home? Give me a break. You can find much better than that in Brentwood and its a safe city!!!

Yeahhhh I agree. Post above is pretty exaggerated. My folks' properties in desirable areas of San jose/Milpitas are 500k +/- 50k for 4br. Anyways I don't think op is looking to buy a home either.

Honestly, it's the same for all metros. No nurse is buying a home in the heart of LA, home is gonna be in the valley. Same for San Diego, but I think the market here is the best in terms of affordability and distance to work and desirable areas.

To stay on track here I make a base of $35.94 plus differential for my shift - which averages me to about $37 and change p/hr.

I wish more people would actually post hard numbers. There's a reason for having so many of these threads. They last about 5 comments before degenerating and finding actual published pay rates in CA (socal or otherwise) is limited to the UC system....or the UC system (although I believe Marina Del Rey hospital states their pay at $50 p/hr for ER).

I have a lil over 1 year exp. I have a BSN and I work ER, in North LA CO.

Please post more $ info :)

1yr @ucsd. 38 or 39 (I don't look at my stubs lol) with differentials of 4(nights) and 3(weekends).

No offense but Brentwood isn't really considered the East Bay Area to most people. It's cheaper because you have to drive quite a bit a ways to get to the East Bay (commute-wise). I like Brentwood... would live there if it didn't literally take 70 mins to drive from Brentwood to Pleasanton. I lived in Mountain House for a couple years and did the long commute for cheaper rent/mortgage so I'm not sticking my head in the sand. Maybe I should also add that if you don't mind commuting and lots of traffic then you can get less expensive housing.

This got way off track anyway. My apologies, OP!

By state regulations, the ratio can not exceed 1:6 in med/surg.

All the ratio regs (if you are curious to see where your specialty falls):

that's cause brentwood is in the middle of nowhere and most people living there have to commute extremely far to work..

I have an interview with Sharp in a few weeks for an ortho unit. Another poster stated sharp, scripps, and uscd with my 5 years experience would be 38-45. Anyone have specific information about Sharp so I'm prepared to discuss it during my interview? Thanks! Also what is night shift diff like?

"Extremely far" and "middle of nowhere" seem to be exaggerations to me.

Just did a quick Google Maps search and see that Brentwood is

I suppose it's all relative.

Thanks for the info Mclennan! I am looking to move to California from New York. I have a BSN as my second degree. Prior to this I was a financial analyst and majored in econ and bio as an undergrad. I worked one year on a telemetry unit as a new grad, and spent the last two years working on a renal/liver transplant unit. So I guess I'm looking for a position as a staff RN within a hospital since that is where my experience lies. I was just wondering if I will be able to find a job that will be able to pay well enough to keep me afloat with my student loans and living expenses. Do you happen to know which area in Cali pays the best? Thanks!

Do you even care to ask about specific areas you're considering living, or just what area pays the best?

Jennafez and madelynsmom apparently have some point they are trying to make. However, both of them do nothing more than exaggerate and make claims that simply aren't true. I'm guessing they over paid for their homes and feel the need to justify it. I'm done trying to argue with them, nevertheless. Can't argue with people that throw out facts and have no truth to them.

Btw, I googled the time from Brentwood to Pleasanton and it said the drive would take 45 minutes, not "literally 70 minutes."
