Pay Raise After Nursing Residency?

How soon after completing nursing residency did you get a pay raise? We were paid 24.50 through our residency period which is soon about to end and I just got an offer from another hospital that I equally like for 4.50 more. The problem is that we have been told that there will not be salary increase this year and probably next because of the economy yada yada. But I really want to stay at my current job because they gave me a chance as a new grad and trained me so much. It will be good if they get return on their investment but 24.50 after residency is too small from my viewpoint, and 29.00 at this time is too sweet to pass up. I have a few days to make up my mind.

Great comments I must say. I appreciate what you all said. If money is all I cared about I won't even start this thread.

To the person that talked about cutting back to pay student loans I will say I am bone dry. There's nothing to cut. I don't even live up to my means. It is a great advice btw, it just doesn't apply to me.

While I may not know what I'm going to encounter in a new workplace, I am not afraid of whatever that may be as well. One's success or failure in any situation depends on her positive character and outlook, and I've got plenty of both. The only holdback is that I love, love working here. I may stay put for a year but if our neighboring hospitals keep wooing me and our management insists on salary freeze...I will continue to love them but from across the street.

What the heck are you talking about? Money is the only thing you are considering here! And how come you were perfectly happy with your wage when you started this job, but now you are scared and bone dry after you get another offer?

You must do whatever you feel is best for you. If you stay will you become resentful...not good for entire staff....if you leave it is the unknown factor......

Money is not the true motivator here.....your success as a nurse is... yes 15K sounds like alot, and it is ..but if it is the wrong move at the wrong time, you may find yourself out of work and not actually making the 15K extra. Only you will know when you need to move on, for some it is sooner and others it is later. We all have different goals in life. Good luck in your decision.

If you think $24.whatever is not enough for what you know after less than a year maybe you should take your over confident self somewhere else. I'm sure there are seasoned nurses who have been at you hosp. for 5-6 yrs and are making little more than you do. If you are in this just for the money bedside nursing will not get it. Get your masters write a book, do research, start a business, bedside nursing is not where the money is, it is however where the satisfaction can be found if you do your job well.

It's not everyday us nurses come across great opportunities. I've had my license since January and I have been having a hard time getting into any hospital let alone two job offers. I currently work as a Home health RN and I have been capped in pay since the 3rd week of me being there because of "Medicaid". So forgive me if I sound bitter, but I think you should stay at least a year and maybe they will start to have more job opportunities for us new RNs. Just my opinion.

Have you looked into the reason this other hospital offers so much more?

Do they have to do this to retain nurses in a bad situation? I would be a little more leery of why they pay more.

Also, is there a night diff where you work now? If you really need more money, try that for a while. You might just love it!
