It depends on the facility. New RNs in long term care are starting around $24 per hr. A girl I know said that a UPMC Presby she started as a GN at $19 something per hour. My sister-in-law is an ICU nurse at Presby (has been working there for about 4-5 years) and is making close to $25 per hr. I'm curious to know if anyone else knows what nurses are making in this area. It depends on the facility, amount of experience the nurse has, shift you're working, and area of specialty.

I'm a new nurse here in the 'burgh, and the majority of my class was offered $19-$22/hr right out of school. Some of us were offered a little more depending on facility/floor, plus past experience as a PCT, EMT, etc.

Most of the job postings on UPMC post starting pays...for RNs in hospital setting its usually like $22/hour...office positions tend to be like $15/hr

thanks for the answers. Now when you guys say it depends on what shift you work what does that mean? What are the higher paying shifts? Also, what times are the shifts and can you choose if you work a day or night shift or do they just tell you?

Night shifts usually get a night bonus and weekends usually get a weekend bonus. It may be like $0.50 or $1 or $2 dollars; it just depends. If they offer 8 hour shifts...they are usually 7a -3pm; 3pm- 11pm; 11pm - 7am. Twelve hour shifts tend to be 7a- 7p; 7p-7a. The one hospital I had an offer from started the night shift bonus at 4pm and the weekend bonus from Friday at 11pm to Sunday at 11pm. There is often great holiday pay as well (1 1/2x - 2x normal rates). As far as what you actually work, most often you will sign on for day shifts or night shifts but there can be rotating positions. Usually the position will indicate day/night/rotating within the description.

thanks so much for clarifying that. I always wondered.

I know this varies, but maybe someone can give me a ball park.

RN with 13+ yrs in LTC (BSN, not that it counts at most facilities) 3-11 shift. What do you think is the range for LTC nurses?

What do you think I could expect if I would go to acute?
