Patients who are too lazy to open their own splenda packets

Good grief, some patients want to revert back to being 9 month old infants!!! They also like to ask requests one at a time. Then, after you wait on them hand and foot all shift with the patience of a saint, they turn on you in an instant when their latest trivial request is not immediately granted due to the fact that there is someone circling the drain in the room next door. :rolleyes:

Yesterday, I was admitting an older gentleman about 79, still "active" with his girlfriend. His son told me thats why he was here. Anyway, when discussing whether or not he wanted CPR he said, "as long as its you that jumps up on top of me and starts pounding" !!!!! YUCK!!!!

The most annoying things to me is the 50-60 year old man who has perfect control over his arms and hands. He can cut up his own food, eat and drink from a cup no problem. But his wants his female nurse to hold his urinal for him while he pees. That just reeks of some disgusting misogynist sexual fantasy and I will always refuse to play along.

If you are old and weak and have Parkinson's tremor, I will discreetly help you with your bodily functions that's different. But I refuse to assist any perverted fantasies creepos. It still amazes me how many there are that try to insist on this. :nono:

I never did figure out why these guys think that a woman would want to watch them pee. I did have a resident who had a stroke with one sided paralysis do it all by himself, only needing someone to empty it.

I had a patient like that once in clinical..mind you this man had fed himself that very morning! And he wanted me to place his member INTO the urinal!! :no:I refused politely but was thinking to myself "if you can hold a fork, you can hold your p***er".:D

I figure some people who read that are going to think it was funny, others offensive. I make no apologies for it.

It was not premeditated. I was about to begin a task that I felt was more important than dropping what I was doing to go fetch a cup of water (there were sinks in the room, after all). I neglected to close the curtain behind me, but it being night shift, didn't think anyone other than staff would look in the room.

In retrospect, yes, it was not the right thing to do, but as Stevie Wonder said,

"You grow up and learn that kinda thing aint right

GOOD FOR YOU...and really, I don't think anyone here feels it is necessary for you to explain yourself. I think we are all secretly jealous that you were able to think quickly enough to put a stop to the "where is that nurse".

I've been an OB nurse off and on since the '60s, and the ratio of nurse: patients, is much, much better now - probably due to all the machinery: monitors, IV pumps, etc. - and the proclivity of patients to sue, sue, sue.:nurse:

People are sue crazy anymore. And they will sue for the most ridiculous reasons. Next thing you know, someone will sue a nurse because she saved someones life during a code blue instead of being there immediately to bend a straw, move a glass one inch, or open a splenda packet.

My post isn't about lazy pts, although, I do have thousands of those stories. What about lazy co-workers? I have been a nurse aid for 4 yrs now and I am still amazed at the lack of team work. I get so sick and tired of people passing the buck because they wasn't taught that or that's why I went to school so I didn't have to do that. Pardon me but, isnt it all pt care! I wish I had a $ for every time I have passed trays and watched the RN's sit and chit chat or a bed alarm go off with an RN standing 2 feet away and I have to run down the hall so the pt doesn't hit the floor..that is absurd. But the one that takes the cake is for an RN to be in that pts room and page an aid to do the simplest task such as set up the tray. Now don't get me wrong I know RN's have their things that have to be done but if your chit chatting you can help out.

Another good reason I'm looking forward to going back to Africa, where people tend to be very grateful for the care they receive (and there's generally not a lawyer to be found outside of the big cities).

I'm a neuro nurse. I don't know if it's still the case, but neurosurgery and obstetrics used to be the highest liability medical specialties. I've known neurosurgeons who had never been sued that had to leave their practice because they couldn't afford the premium on their .

I was told that the sexual attempts are efforts to be in power, since illness takes that strength away. Men think they're not real men without some sexyness, at times. The ones who are secure in their lives won't do that. On the other side, some wives stay glued to their men in hospital (especially if he's wealthy), if they think the nurse is the predator.:no:

I was once on clincal with the public health nurse who told me when she was a rural nurse a 60 year old guy rung her up at 2.30 in the mornign to ask if she could come round and butter his toast.
