a patients hemoglobin and hematocrit

Published

Why would a patients hematocrit and hemoglobin levels be low with pneumonia?

Did they just get a large fluid bolus? How are their other labs? Are they low also?

Did the lab specimen come off an PIV or a PICC and maybe there was not enough waste?

Are they in generally poor health, anemic, malnourished?

It might not be related, just coincidental.

How "low" are we talking?

do you know what they were before pneumonia?

Is this for school? What else is going on with the patient? Qualify "low"

It is for school, Im a nursing student and it was my patients lab results. The labs were not really that low to cause concern. I just had to give a rational for the lab trends, and was confused as to how to relate her diagnosis of pneumonia to the H&H labs

They very well may not be related at all. What were the values, specifically? And how old was the patient? If she's pre-menopausal, she may just hang out on the lower side due to menstrual losses. I seriously see posts on this board all the time asking about "low" hemoglobins in the 11s that are better than my most recent hemoglobin of 10.3.
