Hi,
I just got a job as a patient sitter and it pays 15 $ Canadian per hr during days and 16 $ per hour on nights
Is this an average rate of pay for a "patient sitter" type of job? I was just wondering what the going rate for this type of job is.
The job entails mostly watching the pt if they are confused, etc.
Thanks!

Ive made $15-20 per hour doing the same, but in private/homecare in Ont...ie paid by pt's POA, NOT a facility.. in the last 5 or 6 years. Pretty good, depending on your responsibilities and the needs of your client I suppose. Im not sure about in facility pay. Good time for reading though - especially during the night.
I wish I could get onto that again - I was just offered a CNA job in a busy nursing home (in Utah) for $8.20/hr...after gas and a bb sitter..would be $4/hr. GEEZ!!!

It's a hospital based job :)

I'd take it, and I'm a nurse!

HI. That's about what I make as a sitter. I work at a hospital. Some nights you can't beleive you're getting paid that much for what your doing. Some nights you can't believe you're not getting paid 100 dollars an hour.

I am a nurse apprentice on a pediatrics floor, and unfortunately am required to sit once in a while when no sitters are available. Most of our sitters are actually CNA's floated from other departments and their pay is $16.23 for per diem (most of the CNA's are per-diem at my hospital).
I don't mind sitting until it hits 4:00 a.m. and then it is very hard to stay up. Patients on the pediatrics floor that typicaly need 1:1 observation are those with suicidal ideations. I have never had anything go wrong while sitting and I end up sitting there watching movies with the kid/teen.

Consdering you do as much as the old guy who stands at the front of the walmart, that's a good wage.
Kind of harsh.
Yes, there isn't much to sitting (and everytime I have sat it didn't take much more effort than the greeter at Wal-Mart). But I know of situations where sitters are attacked or sitters need to begin CPR on their patient.

I don't think that is an accurate statement at all. Of all the times I have needed to call in a sitter the patient has been pulling out lines, getting out of bed, hollering at the staff and more.

Thank you. I am a sitter and I was attacked two nights ago. My patient took the bedside phone to my head, face and neck 15 or 20 times before they could get me away from him. I ended up in the ER. It's not always an easy job!

WOW! The sitters in my hospital make about $8/hour and aren't expected to do anything BUT "sit." In fact, they are NOT trained in CPR, and are specifically instructed to do nothing but "watch" the patient. I can't even get them to lend a hand with grabbing a supply for me, much less turning or feeding or transferring a patient...
A sitter is not allowed to do any sort of patient care (turning, feeding, transferring, etc.). I think the only time a sitter is able to do this is if they are a CNA, Nurse Apprentice, etc.
