Pathophysiology - HELP!

Published

I am taking this class currently, and just got a 58 on my midterm.  I am horrified.  I studied, took copious notes, and feel like there is no guidance in my program.  (Yes it’s online, but I’ve made my bed).  We didn’t have a seminar last week or this week, and there’s no feedback as to what was missed/what I need to learn.

What study materials have others used?  Our textbook is Porth, I bought PrepU access, and tried various strategies for prioritizing topics and note taking.  I am drowning.

Eating some humble pie because I thought I was Super Nurse, but I need help!

Did you finish? Is there any advice on this class. I feel the someway you do right now. I have done everything and I don't feel the textbook is helpful Porth in my opinion should be scrapped.

Porth is horrible!  I did finish, and I find it useful as a reference but not as a primary textbook.  When I read it again, having a fair grasp of the content, I can tell English is not the primary language of some of the authors.  Punctuation is lacking and drastically changes the readability and meaning in some chapters. (Referring to 10th edition).

To get through this class, I bought Pathophysiology Made Ridiculously Simple by Berkowitz.  That's the jumping off point, then read Porth to get more in depth with the content.  Then I used Anki decks, premade,  to help make everything stick.

My program seemed to want to condense 4 years of medical school into 1 class.  The amount of work I put in was incredibly disproportionate to the credits or grade I earned (89).  My program got better, still  demanding but not impossible.  I think my program used pathophysiology to weed people out after making them pay for all the front-loaded fluff classes.  Good luck!  ???

I can assure you that your one class did not cover 4 years worth of medical school.

Um, yeah.  That's exactly what I was saying.  Try reading the post. ?

We also can also assure you that it did not. Take it easy, no one is threatening your superiority.

What the poster is saying is that at the expense of any possibility of retention or deeper understanding, the information is condensed and crammed into a single semester, AS IF it is even remotely possible to gain a respectable understanding with that approach.

at least people finally realizing 2 years of soft work doesn’t = med school and residency

I never said or believed it did.  Why are you on a nurse practitioner student discussion board? Your comments contribute nothing constructive or helpful.  There's a subreddit available called r/Noctors if you prefer NP bashing, as well as https://www.midlevel.WOW!/

You may find conversation on your level there.

Thank you Jwrith.RN I will be taking your advice. I have to take it a second time. I tried my hardest but that text book honestly did me a disservice. I didn’t partake in any of the study groups because sometimes they can get off topic. This class was definitely stressful. When we do our survey I will definitely let them know that there are better patho books than Porth’s. Also, you never said anything wrong about how they cram all this information in one class. Everyone knows that medical school is intense but when referencing it I didn’t see why him or her felt the need to get their underwear in a bunch.

according to that website link you posted they really do need to replace Porth with something better in NP school

That's the whole point of this thread.
