Hi Everyone,

I am new to this forum, I didn't want to "jinx" myself by joining a nursing website until I had the magic initials "RN". Anyway, I took my test yesterday, and Massachusetts is one of those states you can look it up the day after (nothing from pearson vue til tomorrow). So it says my current license is an RN, but it expires 12-22-10 (my birthday) is this normal? Did I only "semipass" and get some sort of temp license? I only just moved to MA from Phildadelphia last month and don't have any RN new grad buddies here to compare with yet. Thanks!!!

I have the same thing going on with my CT license, I only have it 6 months and then I have to renew because RN licenses in CT expire the last day of your birthday month. Too bad I couldn't get the fee prorated :p

Congrats on passing! If youre like me, you cried pretty much all of yesterday, lol. So this is normal? I didnt know if it was like, well, close, but not enough to fail you, here is a temp license, I'm especially confused 'cause if you search for me on MA database, it says "registered nurse" AHHHHH!!!!! :-)

Also...am I going to have to restest? Seems like a pretty crummy bday/holiday gift! LOL....just happy I PASSED!

No, you don't have to retest. But you do have to reregister in December due to the way registrations are regulated in your state. Where I live, all rgistrations expire at midnight on the last day of September. As you can see, I live in Canada so it's a wee bit different here... results can take up to six weeks to reach the candidate. So let's say I wrote on June 2, the last date that our exam was available. I might have my results by July 10. If I drive down to the College of Nurses that day and pay my registration fee, I'll still only have a permit to practice until the end of September. (When I moved here, I started work September 9... so I paid twice for registration in the same month. Kinda stinks.) Does that clear it up for you?

BTW :ancong!: to you and every other newly hatched RN!!

In MA, RN licenses expire on EVEN years (2010) every two years, the month of your birthday. I believe the only exception is if your birthday is within a certain date of initial licensure (like 60 or 90 days). All the info is on their website in the license renewal section.

I can beat that -- I moved to CT to attend grad school, and applied for licensure (by endorsement) as soon as I knew I was going up there. It took forever for them to finally issue my license -- it finally arrived in August. BUT, my birthday is in September so, sure enough, I had to turn around and pay to renew only a month after I'd gotten the license. I couldn't believe I had to pay that much (the initial application fee) for a license that was only good for a little over a month!

Welcome to allnurses!

I'm also in MA, and yes, this is totally normal. RN licenses expire on your birthday in even years, LPNs on odd years in MA. As another poster mentioned, there is some sort of grace period 60-90 days or something (the BON website could tell you for sure) if your birthday falls right after you pass the NCLEX.

CONGRATS!

I too just passed in July and have to renew in November. I guess this is how they make their money but worth it for me because, hey I passed!

I was wondering if they automatically mail you the renewal in mass or what the procedure is. And is it true our school credits should cover us for any needed CEUs.

Congrats to you on passing...are you having difficulty finding a job as well? My entire class is!

my license was issued 08/05/2010 and doesn't expire until 07/31/2012 but my classmates that took it between May through July license expires 04/30/2012 --- IDK how the state board of nursing came to that conclusion.

Hello everyone? I took and passed my NCLEX July 20th today my license (RN) posted but it expires December of this year? Does anyone know why that would be?
