passed nclex 1st time.. my advice

Published

i got 76 questions. i seriously thought i failed because i got ALOT of questions wrong. but it turned out i passed.

i took the kaplan course also. like many other kaplan takers..i swear my the kaplan QBANK!! at first i was getting low scores on the trainers but i kept on going over it, understanding what kind of questions would be on it. i wish i stuck with kaplan in the beginning.. i went krazy, i borrowed all these nclex review books from the library and i was so determined to cover everything. i own a saunders comprehensive and borrowed lippicots, etc. i like saunders comprehensive because if i didnt know something in kaplan's questions i could look at it as a reference because the kaplan course book is very brief.

soooo i'll say this again...i love love kaplan's trainer questions and qbanks!!

Things to study: MEDS MEDS MEDS (study by category please, if nclex gives you a med question and you dont know its category, sometimes you can guess its category by looking at the answer choices), theyre gonna give you a disease/condition and u should know if its standard/contact/airborne/droplet precautions, LABS, prioritizing, interventions. ALSO practice select any above questions. go to bookstore or library and borrow the 250 alternative nclex questions. thats a GOOD practice book.

let me know if you guys have any questions. i know how it feels to be studying for nclex. now im in this stage where im trying to get a job but it takes forever for them to call back. when will this end?!!? =(

Hi, wow thanks for sharing, and CONGRATULATIONS!!!!:nurse:

I will be taking my test rn, on the 25 ...OMG next week, I feel so unprepared, but I will do my best !!! :bowingpur

I too purchased the Kaplan online course, and have done all the qbank questions but I only did one qtrainer and that was trainer 5 and scored 62%,(I will complete 6 & 7 this weekend) and all my qbank scores have ranged from the mid-50 to 60's! The scores are low, but I dont let them get to me. SInce it has been over a year that I have reviewed nursing content, I am watching the kaplan videos, I KNOW majority like or love saunders, but for me it was too overwhelming, and I became discouraged looking at it, so I decided to regain my focus on kaplan only.

My question is did you watch any of the videos or did any of your friends, and thought they were helpful, I am watching them as last minute refresher, and I also go along with the kaplan course book, I know it is brief but for me it seems to work! How were your scores on the qbank & trainers if you don't mind me asking...I know everyone is diff. but I am just curious to know if I have a chance with my scores! :banghead:

I regret my plan though, I started exactly a month ago doing questions from qbank, but did not really do any book review, only a little with an old hesi book, now that I finished all the qbank, I am really worried and at last minute am doing the videos...if only i had more time!!! Any input would be greatly appreciated!!!! Faith....please keep me in your thoughts on March 25!!! :bow:

CONGRATULATIONS:yeah::yeah::yeah::yeah:

My scores were pretty low also when i started out on kaplan like low 40s 50s but it got better and better .. i think the videos and book content are the same so as long as you review one of them your good. i didnt have the patience to watch all the videos because it was hard to rewind to something i missed and sometimes it was slow to load. personally its faster for me to review the book than watch the videos. uhmm..wat else...question trainers 6 and 7 are longer so make sure you have enough time to go over them too.

where are you at on the kaplan videos? are you almost done?

ohhh one more thing.. make sure you know the different types of gaits/crutches/walker stuff. like which foot goes first and etc.

i WILL think of you on the 25th!

Thank-you for responding to me so fast! Well since I just started on the videos yesterday I only managed to finish watching the ones over Safe and Effective Care and will be finished with Reduction of Risk videos tonight...OMG each section is like 13-15 minutes long, I've been watching since early this morning and now it 6pm and I'm only half way through this section! I realized that it is impossilbe to watch all, so I am only watching the sections that have the highest percentage on nclex. Ohhhh, if only I would have done this from the beginning :banghead:. I thought questions would be enough,,,,,,so wrong! Okay, I'm going to go get back to the vids. and then do the trainer 6 at night....After doing all the qbank questions everytime I start a new quiz I get the same questions 2 or 3 times in that quiz. I called kaplan and they told me that is what could happen when you have completed all the question and to delete my internet browser before each test..needless to say it didn't help :bowingpur They also don't have a way of erasing my old history so I could start the bank over...:crying2:

On top of all this stress....my baby baby, is really sick...and now I'm waiting for a nurse to call me back to see if he needs to be seen 2morrow! :no:

By the way, how many questions did u do a night, and how long did you study before taking your exam....just curious!!! :nuke:

THANK-YOU....for you help and encouragement!!!:redpinkhe

Hi

I am giving the nclex this week..i see you have said learn the disease and what precautions to take are these only for infectious diseases like TB, STD's etc or all conditions??? cpould you elaborate plz.. would be helpful..:confused:

This was very helpful. THANKS!! :p

igmirnor,

wat i meant for the infectious diseases is make sure you know what type it is like is it contact/droplet/standared, etc.

TB, HTN, STDs, hiv, diabetes are very common topics and likely to appear on nclex BUT other diseases do appear on nclex so you should know them ALL. i made sure i knew all the diseases mentioned in kaplan course book. hope this helps..

Congratulations!!!:balloons::balloons::balloons:

igmirnor

what i meant was make sure you know the different types of precautions you have to take for each infectious diseases.

make sure you know all the diseases, you never know which one will appear on the nclex. when i studied- i made sure i knew all of the diseases mentioned in the kaplan course book. but the common ones like HTN, diabetes, HIV, TB COMMONLY appear in addition to all the other diseases.

faith00,

i studied 3 months straight right after i graduated. my school kept on telling everyone that based on evidenced based practice.. students should take their nclex within 3 months of graduating. i guess the theory behind it is that you tend to forget more if you wait longer..

i did as many questions i could cram every day.

you have to know absolutely everything for the nclex exam, including the basic nursing and dont forget about cpr. know how to give cpr in an emergency situation.
