Passed the NCLEX - Foreign educated Nurse

Published

Hi Everyone

I have often come to this site looking for help and so I wanted to post my NCLEX story as I thought it may help someone else.

I have a Bachelor of Nursing from an Australian University.

I just sat the NCLEX on Wednesday and found out the next day from the BON that I had passed!!!!!

I have to be honest and say I did very little study. I borrowed some old NCLEX textbooks from a friend (2013) and used some free online resources. I have three kids 6 and under so I don't get much quiet time at all.

I found the exam tough but I got through it.

I am really looking forward to starting work now.

Hi Miriam80, Congrats!

Seems like you did well done even though you've got lots of things to do.

By the way, I am studying Bachelor of nursing in Australia but I have a plan to do Nclex exam.

When you go through application for the Nclex exam, isn't there any issues to be qualified to get exam from CGFNS? Because I've heard lots of Aussie nurses saying that australian RN had gone through some issues when they apply Nclex exam regarding Paediatrics, Maternity or mental health clinical things. Did you take an exam without any additional course in USA?

Hi. Miriam80, flytothemoon or anyone can help me ?

I completed Bachelor of Nursing in 2012 in Australia. Do I need to take additional courses to have my degree certified by CGFNS?

If it is the case, what course should I take ? It would be much appreciated if anyone could give me advice.

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

Did you complete theory & clinical in adult med/surg, geriatrics, pediatrics, mental health and obstetrics/maternity? Does this coursework appear on your transcript? When applying for CES with CGFNS you must indicate which state board of nursing you are applying for a nursing license by examination as an internationally educated nurse. Each state has slightly different requirements. CA does their own evaluation. NY requires CVS report.

Hi

No, you don't need to take additional courses to have your degree evaluated by CGFNS.

However, when you receive your CES Report it may say you are deficient in certain areas.

For Australian educated nurses these areas usually are pediatrics, mental health and/or obstetrics/maternity. Whether or not you are deficient in certain areas depends entirely on what theory courses you did at university and in what areas you did your clinical practice.

What State Board do you want to apply too? Each State Board have different requirements.

This is my story.....

I applied to CGFNS for a CES Report. I applied to Virginia State Board.

I was found to be deficient in clinical hours for OB/Maternity.

I contacted the Virginia State Board and spoke to them at length about my situation. They were extremely nice and very helpful.

Despite lacking the OB/maternity hours clinical hours I was given permission to sit the NCLEX on the provision that when I passed it I would be issued a provisional license so that I could arrange to do the clinical hours I required. Once I completed these hours I would be given my full license.

I passed the NCLEX, was issued the provisional license and I arranged to complete the clinical hours with the assistance of a local university.

By the time I received my CES Report I was already living in the USA so I was able to complete the clinical hours I needed here in Virginia.

My advice to you would be just apply for your CES report and see what it says.

Hope this helps

Thank you for your advice. JustBeachyNurse.

I'm planning to apply to New Mexico. I may lack of clinical hours in obstetrics/Maternity and paediatrics.

but I'm going to apply CES report at CGFNS first and see how it goes.

Thank you for your advice. Miriam80. It was great help.

I'm going to do as you advised, apply for CES report and may contact BON if I need

Hi @Miriam80 , I'm so glad to have stumbled across your post! I'm currently applying to nursing programs in CA but am extremely interested in applying in Australia. From your experience, do you have any specific schools or programs that you would recommend applying to for reasons of easily being able to transfer back to the USA?

Hey Miriam, My name is Steve, I'm typing this out as I think my experience is going to be very similar to yours and I'm hoping you can give me some details as to who to speak to at the Virginia BoN and who to contact at which uni for make up courses. I'm an RN with 10years+ of psychiatric work on the Gold Coast and a Masters in MH Nursing from Griffith in QLD. I'm expecting my CES next week. (I applied in October of 2015). I have a green card, permanent residency, and I'm coming to Richmond on Wednesday 13th of April with my wife and 21yo daughter. Any and all advice as to good areas for work/home and all the other "stuff" would be much appreciated. Please and thank you, etc.

How did you go, peaceandjoy?

Are you only trained as a specialist MH nurse or a generalist nurse?

New Mexico BON said I didn't meet the minimal requirement for Board of Approval due to lack of obstetric and paediatric theory and clinical hours. I'm planning to do further study of these and searching for the courses.:(
