Parkland SICU Residency

Published

Parkland SICU Residency opened on April 29, 2014!!!

Good luck to all! SICU is a great unit and I spent many, happy years there!!

Thanks MissRN.BSN- staffing is so important on any unit and I know all too well on my current unit what it is like to be the only tech available for the night. Not so pleasant for every member of the team. I like when physicians are available to clarify issues quickly. Not sure if I would fully trust a 1st or 2nd year resident completely but it is good that someone is at least available. :)

As far as the interview, mine was all of 5 minutes. Questions may pop up like Why parkland? Why should we choose you? Tell me about a time you felt you did a job well done at work? What are you expecting from this unit? My advice is to not answer the questions so quickly, take a minute to gather your thoughts before spitting it out. Basically, sell yourself in the most humble way possible if that makes sense. Have questions prepared for them.. ask about the unit.

Mernah- staffing is definitely important. There are times where there's just one tech and the unit is completely full.. less than ideal! Also we used to have a nurse practitioner on call at night. She no longer works at Parkland anymore but things definitely ran a lot smoother in comparison to when some of the newbie docs are on call

the er residency was 15 minutes and similar questions. Good advice on answering questions--- confident but humble.

Some of my questions were: Describe a conflict you had and how you resolve it. You were in SICU before, why do you want to go into the ER residency? You will be working with a lot of 20 somethings, how do you feel about that? What are your strengths? From these simple questions, i was able to expand on the answers and make them "more complete" and how they relate to me. For all those that are applying to SICU, listen carefully to MissRN, BSN, she is dead on how to get hired in that unit. I remember a LOT of days she is describing in her posts. It is amazing how over 20 years, things don't change as much as I thought they had.

Has anyone got an interview yet

No. Still waiting.

if it is like the er residency, they won't send your application on until the job application has closed. As of today, it is still open, so hang in there guys.

MissRN - great tips on interviewing! I recently did Capstone in SICU and loved every minute of it:). Every nurse I worked with was great and you are so right about team work on that unit. That was one of the things that stood out to me most - how willing everyone was to help out - especially when the same was done in return. I am so excited about interviewing next week and hope to become part of the awesome group there!

Dfwnurse2be- I got my interview on Friday. When's yours? Hopefully we'll meet one day

Anyone know how many ppl they will be taking?

Wanger2525-mine is on May 21st! I was told by one of the managers that it will be a small residency, around 4 people.
