Paradise to the Bay!

So here i am in Hawaii and I am moving to San Francisco. I have never lived in SF and dont know many hospitals that have new grad training programs.

I already know about the new grad training programs at Kaiser, Stanford, UCSF, but other than these hospitals I dont know of any more.

I was hoping some of the folks in San Francisco could direct me to various hospitals that have new grad training programs.

Thank you.

Aloha

Not to discourage you, but a couple of weeks back, in the news, there was a segment on the status of "nursing shortage in California" Well, according to them, that is not the case anymore... schools have been putting out enough nurses and so the urgency is no longer an issue at the moment. They talked about the 2 year programs putting out quite a lot new grads. I say this because I have read posts on how difficult it is for new grads to get hired.

I guess what i am saying is please be well prepaid, it maybe a challenge as a "new graduate" to secure employment or a quick interview. From my understanding, hospitals are quick to hire from students who trained in house?

Now to answer your question on other hospitals, did you look at the Sutter Health hospitals?

All the best!

We don't have so much of a shortage mainly because of our unions, CNA in particular, who has made it possible to get a good salary and has attracted nurses from other places for the salary and benefits. If you have some experience it might be easier.

Definitely get a job before you make the move. There are very limited positions as a new grad and only two to three start dates per year as well for many of the facilities for their new grad programs.

Next one is in August, but suspect that all positions are already taken, and the local grads that did their training in one or worked there while in school always get the preference.

It is not easy to get a job in the area as a new grad, so please get things lined up before you make the move.

What about the VA hospitals...Palo Alto etc..

I'm currently living in the bay area ( originally from SoCal)

Same facts pertain to them as well. It is not going to be easy to get a new grad job anywhere in the Bay Area at this time of year. Next programs start in July/August and they are already all filled. Expect the next programs not to start for months after that.

Palo Alto is going to be a hike if you are in the city. The commute will be absolutely crazy, but again, the chances of getting a new grad program at this time of the year is almost impossible. Even the students that trained in the area are not all finding jobs.

If you already have two years of current experience, then not a problem finding a job; but as a new grad, it is going to be quite tough for you.

You are going to have to spend quite a bit of time contacting facilities no matter what.

Do you already have a CA license or have written the NCLEX exam?
