Paper on Male Nursing

Nursing Students Student Assist

Published

im a male nursing student at lsu and i have been given the task of writing a refutation paper on the subject " can male nurses be just as effective as women nurses?" ive gotten a lot of research done and ive been able to find lots of support saying that men can be just as effective but i have to find some research against it and i was wondering if anyone knew of any articles that pretty much were just outright against male nursing any help is greatly appreciated

thanks

Actually I haven't heard of any specific research. Did you look at the references listed at the end of the research articles you did look at? One of them might have cited a gender based study on male careers that you might be able to use yourself. Did you look at anything in Men in Nursing? You can also write a letter to the author of research you have read and tell them what you are looking for information on to see if they can steer you in a direction. The people who do the research on these things do a lot of literature research before deciding on the actual articles they use to support their projects. I wrote to the nurse researcher of a field I was doing my senior research project on and she sent me tons of information.

thanks for the help ... i think with the stuff you helped me find and my own info combined i have enough information

I don't have any research to share with you, but I wanted to add my $0.02 to the discussion--what a dumb question you school has thrown at you! Gender has nothing to do with one's ability to be an effective nurse. Some of the best nurses I've worked with are male, and some of the worst are female. Just asking that question perpetuates the idea that there are "nurses" and "MALE nurses" in this world, and that's really too bad. If we, as professionals, buy into this fallacy, how can we be surprised with the public believes it, too? Anyway, I'm off my soapbox now...sorry. :) :twocents:

well they arent making us write about it... the real assignment is write about a controversial subject in your field and i had read that males have been discriminated against in the nursing field... i couldnt really think of anything else to write about at the moment when we were choosing our subjects...

I dont see anything controversial about it. Men are just as effective as women. I think it is all in the attitude.

I think women may be better at some fields, such as working with newborns and such, being that we have that maternal instinct, but as far as nursing goes, I think it is great that men are getting in there.
