Owing Taxes and Licensing

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I heard if you owe taxes, the state will not issue you your License...is that true? Someone else said, if you owe as long as you have a payment plan established that they will allow you to get your license.

Help...because I owe and it's going to take a while to pay off.

Every state establishes its own policies/regulations about that. Your best bet would be to contact your state Board of Nursing and ask them about your situation.

this is an interesting thread...i had never heard of it myself..i didn't even know one thing had anything to do with the other..keep us updated

I have posted about this many times before. My license was suspended because my state said that I failed to file in the year 2000. I did file, and I have been fighting for over 3 years to get my license back. I lost my job, insurance for my entire family, my apartment, my car. I am on medicaid and food stamps. I try to find jobs that I can walk to; the gas station down the street wouldn't even hire me citing that i am overqualified. Please, please, please learn from my experience. File every year and keep your papers where you can find them. We finally figured out my problem was that the accountant I used that year only mailed the taxes to federal, and not state. After getting all the W2's from that year for my husband and I (we file married), I re-filed and the state now has them. I'm just waiting for them to issue me a letter of compliance so I can return to work. Please learn from my mistake and tell every nurse you know about this. :scrying:

UPDATE: Here it is, Keep in mind this for Maryland from BON.

RE:Notice of Maryland Tax Deficiency

Notice of Impending Denial of License or Certificate

Dear Licensee or Certificate-holder:

During the past legislative session, the Maryland General Assembly decreed that the Maryland State Boards and Commissions, including the Maryland Board of Nursing (the "Board"), may not renew licenses or certificates where the licensee or certificate-holder is delinquent in payment of taxes to the State of Maryland. Please note that the Board of Nursing has no discretion in this matter and is not authorized to make exceptions to the law passed by the General Assembly.

You are hereby advised to contact the Comptroller at 410-974-2432 immediately to arrange for payment of your tax deficiency. Until the Board receives verification from the Comptroller that you have paid the delinquent taxes or made arrangements for payment that are satisfactory to the Comptroller, renewal of your license/certification will be delayed.

DO NOT CALL THE BOARD OF NURSING TO DISCUSS THIS MATTER; COMMUNICATION WITH THE COMPTROLLER IS THE ONLY METHOD THAT WILL RESOLVE YOUR TAX DELINQUENCY AND THE RESULTING DELAY IN RENEWAL.

Once you have resolved your tax dispute, the Comptroller will notify the Board that the hold on your renewal is lifted. The Board will then be authorized to proceed with renewal of your license or certificate.

Sincerely, Donna M. Dorsey, R.N., M.S.

Executive Director
