I'm a first year SN and I've just picked up my books today. I'm not overwhelmed by the number of books (13 for 1 class, but mostly reference books) and although I will need to be a weight lifter to carry around the 5,000 lbs. of books, I'm not overwhelmed by that either. I made the mistake (?) of opening the course "packet" which contains everything for orientation later this week, the syllabus, the course outcomes, the reading assignment list, etc., etc. OMG. I know, I know, I have a lot of reading to do and I'm not at all scared of that, I guess just seeing it in black & white on the page in front of me makes it, well, more REAL.
Don't get me wrong, this is not a complaint - more of a rant of sorts. I'm super excited and could not be more proud to be a student nurse....I'm 31 and I have wanted this my whole life. I guess it's kinda like sticker shock when you buy a new car or house.
Take this advice from a 30-year vet with a bad back to prove it. . .get a book bag with wheels or one of these new folding crates on wheels to haul all those books back and forth to class. Do not carry them around and put that burden on your back. Your will pay for it years later down the road.
i agree~:wink2:

Even better, have Kinko's or something similar debind your books! It's pretty cheap and this way you can only take with you the sections you really need.
Don't forget to laugh at your classmates carrying 43 pounds of books, while you just have a small 3-ring notebook with EVERYTHING you need for the week in it. Trust me, this is one of the greatest tips I ever got, it really works and will save your back in ways you can't imagine.
Of course, make sure you will be able to know which chapter you'll be dealing with each week before you do this. You'll find though that you can usually do this for most, if not all of your books.
How can you NOT be overwhelmed? I dont think there is a soul here that wasn't a little flabberghasted when they first got all their materials. Its a whole new way of learning to boot. Just like the others said, break it all down in little pieces and it gets easier to manage. It took me all semester to get myself organized but now going into my 2nd semester I feel I have a grip, so don't get yourself all worked up...YOU CAN DO THIS, you made into the program for a reason. Congratulations on your new journey!!!
