I'm from CA & currently in school for my RN. 12 hour nursing shifts seem to be the norm. I know Cali is a state where anything over 8 hours per day is considered overtime ... does this apply to nursing as well?

Usually when you accept a 12 hour position you are, in essence, foregoing your right to overtime. It's usually stipulated in a union contract. It works out, though, because you are generally paid more per hour for the 12 hour shift. There are two diiferent rates. When I do an 8 I am paid at $63/hr and when I do a 12 it is $69/hour for example.
I am a 12 hour hired position but for the people who were hired as 8 hour people, they do get the time and a half for anything after the 8. At least that's the way it is here--we are CNA BTW

or they give you a time and a half if say youre on a 12 hr shift and on your 9th-12th hour is paid with time and a half...beyond 12 hrs is double pay.. well this is the way it goes at least at long beach memorial medical center where i work at

Depends on how the contract is worded. You may find that those that are on regular 12 hour schedules will get a higher rate of pay, and this is because the time and half has been calculated into the pay rate, and you will see a different rate of pay for those on 8 hour shifts.
Those that are 8 hour people and work extra, then they will get paid at time and half, and for over at double-time.
Just depends if added in to the rate from the beginning or not.
