yeah that would be a great idea. my shift is from 19:00-07:00(they use military time there by the way)...its kinda fun meeting new peeps in a very new environment.. the people there have been really warm to newbies like us, well at least in my unit. i hope that our scheds wouldnt conflict though so that we could meet-up and chat a little. everytime i pass by the ed at lbmmc, there are like 4 ambulances there always, and though majority of male nurses go for ed, i think that the pressure there is just too much for me so i salute you tabymac. i also considered er before but then my interest shifted to psyche then nicu and finally diabetes care. now im considering about taking up diabetes education just so i could apply to be a certified diabetes consultant in our ward since im already done with my bsn. you can always imporve for the better right... tsheriff i work 3 days a week. 12 hr night shifts.. since im still on my 6 weeks floor orientation phase,i get my schedules whenever my preceptor would be on duty,but then if you pass the 90 day probation period,tahts the only time you can choose which day you would like to work.you can choose if you want to work 3 days straight,or if you want it every other day,or whatever floats your boat.but ofcourse the unit manager still has the final say if she would approve your suggested duty days based on the census and all that. im not sure if they do 12hr shifts on your unit,but if they do, then you can apply for another job elsewhere if you think what youre earnin isnt enough for you and your family... a part-time will do. my older brother has 12hr nightshifts as well at st.francis med . ctr. and he is also working at anaehim general per diem. im plannin on applying for another job at least another 12 hr nightshift position,ft would be better but part-time would do as well.. im giving myself 6 months to at least get used to my first job before planning on looking for another one. 4 days at home is just too much for me.id rather work 6 days a week than stay at home and bum around coz ive been already bumming around for the last 8 months after i graduated and reviewing for my nclex-rn... :monkeydance: but hey of course,you gotta think of your kids as well if you have any coz,working 12 hrs a day could also be draining. im a night person and i myself get worned out workin 12 sometimes(applicable only to my unit).. about the rate increase,if im not mistaken,its 6 months after you were granted the permanent postion,but im gonna check on that just to make sure. annual evaluation doesnt give any bearing on your rate increase. ive asked my preceptor about it and she said that they use to have rate increase based on merit/credit/performance evaluation, but now its based more on how long youve been working there. sorry for the late reply ladies..been workin hard the past few night and so i had no time checkin my mail...anyhow,keep in touch. :balloons:

eitherway,welcome to the memorial care system.. sucks though i dont think LBMMC would give sign-on bonuses...oh well,i still couldnt be more thankful to them for giving me the chance to start my career there as an RN. This is my first job in my whole life and im so excited to go to work everytimet(because i was a fulltime student and bum back then ). yeah having a nurses union is kinda cool because they protect the every right of the nurses and assures no exploitation would happen. :monkeydance: kudos to you!

Im not sure as well with that 2 year contract. My new grad on-the-floor orientation in the unit is only 6 weeks with a preceptor and after that i would be on my own. The 6 weeks orientation also cover skills lab, using SAM, RN orientation,etc. After 6 weeks, youll be on your own. and you would be under probation for 3 months. If i would be granted a permanent position in my unit after my 90 day probation, i would not hesistate to sign a 2 year contract with them. BEfore making any commitments with any hospital,make sure you'll like the department you'll be working at. 2 Years may sound long but you would not even notice that 2 years flew by if youre liking your job. after that 2 years and say you decided to look for another hospital, just being affiliated to any memorial care facility especially LBMMC is already something taht would make your resume more appealing to your next employer. I know i made a wise decision choosing them over st.francis medical center. Because Im loving every second of my work there. I work 12 hrs nights Fulltime which consumes 3 days of my week. How i wish i could work there 6 days a week.. It weird though because i didnt hear that they give sign-on bonuses there. But since they are unionized, i guess i'll also get a sign-on bonus regardless of which area you got hired. ED seems ok. tsheriff :welcome: to LBMMC!!!!

its totally fine..nothing to worry about..i finished my BSN RN degree april last year and i was also 22.. im currently workin at long beach memorial medical center which is one of the best in the country but im getting the hang of it. i maybe the youngest RN in my unit but age is not a factor, its all about how much you know and how you can handle situations.. :monkeydance: be assertive in giving delegations to LVN/CNA's eventhough theyre much older than you just so they would know whos the real boss.. and i wish more women would take interest in us male nurses ..

or they give you a time and a half if say youre on a 12 hr shift and on your 9th-12th hour is paid with time and a half...beyond 12 hrs is double pay.. well this is the way it goes at least at long beach memorial medical center where i work at

wow they pay big $$ for new grad RN's in norcal... here in socal,rates for new grad RN''s are from $26-35 the most excluding night differentials..i recently got hired at long beach memorial medical center and my starting is just 28.33 + 4.50 coz i work at nights.. thats quite low to think im BSN RN. in the LA Downtown area its around $33-35 for new grads..

travel time is also somethin that i consider. and i couldnt agree more that everything is not just about the high rate. i could not be more thankful that a big hospital like long beach would take me and yeah i already learned alotta things in long beach on my first night of work and so im certain ill be stickin with long becah for quite some time.. where are ya located by the way?im in La Miarad and i drive 35-40 mins sidestreet to go to work..doesnt bother me though coz at least im not takin the freeway since im just a new driver.

whoa the rate for new grad RN's there are high..im a new grad RN and i just recently got hired at long beach memorial and they only pay you $28.33 + 4.50 night differential...thats pretty low to think that i am a BSN-RN.. i work nights so that pretty much compensates the low rate that they give new grads RN's... here in LA downtown area, the highest rate that you could be offered as a new grad RN is around $35 excluding night diffs.. im also considering moving to sanfo. maybe that explains why she got paid so high,maybe its because she has a heck of an experience as an LVN before she got the offer as an RN... i went to straight RN program so i guess that gives me less experience since im only 23.

its quite low as compared to st.francis medical center that gives new grad RN's a starting rate of $31-33 + 2.50 with night dfferential... and at LBMMC the rate is $28.33 + 4.50 for differential...good thing i work nights.. i should have applied in downtown LA where they give as much as $35 per hour for new grda RN's excluding night diff's. but i dont take freeways so ill just stick with LBMMC.. :monkeydance:

hmm..thats strange,coz i had a friend whos also a new grad but he works at saddleback and hes rate is the same as mine and im in long beach.. $28.33.. oh well, maybe its just coincidental.. thanks for the info though

i recently got hired an is currently assigned at the adult medical diabetes unit.. the rate in all memorial care hospitals are the same for new grads since they ahve a union for nurses. this is actually a great steeping stone for new grads since this is the second largest privately owned medical center in the whole westcoast and is also part of the top 1% of the best performing medical centers in the whole us,which means you'll get all the exposure and experience you need to start your career as an rn. on my first night i already know how to troubleshoot and use the infusion pump,use picc lines,use the pixis medication distribution system, use sam for charting >> now these are the things that ive learned in school but never had teh cahnce to see in real life and on the unit where i work at,i get to experience everythin in a night.. so i think workin here is a win-win situation for new grads! :monkeydance:

I recently got hired at Long Beach Meorial Medical Center. Im a new grad and the HR told me they dont sponsor nurses anymore from other countries. I also studied in teh philippines but right after graduation i went back here to take my nclex-rn and luckily pass on my first take. I have papers thats why the HR said Im lucky to be a US citizen because they said that they dont petition foreign nurses anymore since its costly.

I also got hired at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center recently and i am working on their Adult MEdical Diabetes Unit. Im also a new grad and just took my nclex-rn for the first time and luckily passed.They called me,got interviewed and finally got the position. I just started on March 30th this year. I think its a good stepping stone for new grads because you'll definitely get alotta exposure with different cases since LBMMC is the second largest privately owned medical center in the whole westcoast, and its part of the TOP 1% of BEST PERFORMING MEDICAL CENTERS IN THE WHOLE US.. so being affiliated with them would do you good if ever you plan to apply in other med centers. On my first night at work I already learned alot in my ward like using and troubleshooting the infusion pump, using the Pixis Medication Distributin System, using SAM for charting, using PICC lines,using Bi-Pap >> I'm liking every second at work since this is the first time I've actually encountered these things( in real life,coz i only see this in med books) since im a foreign grad and by the time my orientation schedule for learning SAM and PIxis would come,I am confident that I already know much of the things i need to know because of my early hand's on duty. ANd so, eitherway working there would be a win-win situation for new grads.. nevermind the low starting rate :trout:.. All the rates in memorial care hospitals would be the same since they have a Union for nurses. Whats important is that we started our career in one of teh best medical centers in the country. Some new grads would just die to be able to work in a big hospital,some even end up working in a convalescent or assisted living facilities so i guess we're lucky tabymac. passed with 75Q as well on my first take...im a foreign grad nursing stud and i didnt even took the local exams there since im a US citizen.so right after graduation there i flew back in cali to review and take my exam..so im pretty proud of myself especially to think im only 23.. coz ive known some people who had been takin it for 5-7 times and theyve been LVNs all their life..and theyre also much much older than me...

yeah i totally agree with what hawaiiRN said.. i answered practice questions as many as i can for 7 months..then when my exam came,it felt like it was just another practice exam for me..didnt pressure myself and overthink what the questions were askin...i had 75 questions...i finished it in 1 hr... and hey,the goodthing is that i passed on my first take .. thinkin taht i didnt take the philippine boards since im US citize.. keep me posted...goodluck and believe in yourself...:pumpiron:
