a girlfriend of mine works in a nursing home as an lvn. long story short, during a change of shifts, she discovered that a pt was given double dosage of dilaudid by a fellow nurse. when she confronted the nurse, the nurse just told her not to worry about it and to just sign for the dispensed med. my friend being an 'honest nurse', reported the incident to the don. now, she's in hot water with the assistant don as well as the other nurses who have been there longer than she has because she 'broke the cycle'. during a meeting, the adon verbally threatened to get her fired (in front of the other nurses) if she bypasses her and goes straight to the don with another problem. btw, the nurse at fault resigned and was never reported to the board. incidentally, another nurse blurted out during a meeting that this has been going on for a long time. there had been other incidents of negligence by other staff members, not to mention the harrassment she's personally getting from them. what would be the best way to report this problem so this specific nursing home can be fully investigated? :nono:

you can all the division of aging and report this without revealing your idenity. they wil come in and do an investigation. is this home owned by a corporation? if so, you might inform someone at the corporate office. did you sign the document? there are many avenues to take here. your friend should document everything that happened and everyone involved for her own records.

I doubt the patient actually received the double dose of Dilaudid.... Your friend did the right thing.

She needs to get out of this facility before she is put in a position of getting fired rather than quitting. Then she can report to the Ombudsman for long term care residents in her area if she wishes.

Meaning that the patient received a dose and so did the nurse. That's what I was thinking also. No wonder she quit.

What does the DON say? Is she in cohoots with the ADON? Why not just bypass the ADON and explain to the DON what has happened and is happening? If that doesn't work...I would go up the chain of command..ADM then if corporate..go to the regionals..etc...Then she could call the state and do an annon message about missing narcs.

Sounds like your friend needs to get out of that situation as quickly as possible.

If I were your friend, I would start looking for a new job. Get the new job, report everything to the DON, etc. Call state BON, Ombudsman, etc. No one deserves to be treated that way.
