Hoka's are good, but go and get fitted, compressions socks help, make sure you get the 8-10 compression to start with if you are not used to them. Dansko's are pretty good, but they are Europeans sizes that you have to go try on to make sure that they fit well. If money is really tight until you get your first check; try Sketchers with memory foam and really thick soles.

Many years ago, I had a bunch of stuff going on w/ my feet and didn't know where to go to buy good athletic shoes for my feet. I wasn't going to use them to run or anything, but for every day use. I ended up going to a specialty running shoes place because they were known to do the best fitting in the area.
When I walked into the place, a lady helped me and asked me what issues I was having w/ my feet. She watched me walk and came back w/ 2 different brands. The first shoe I tried on is the shoe and the brand I still wear until this day and that was 13 years ago!
You may want to go into a specialty shop where they sell shoes for active people or runners (not Foot Locker). Yes, they sometimes charge more but their advice and recommendations are gold.
In case you're curious, the shoes I wear are from Brooks. The Brooks Addiction Walker shoe (VStrap and Reg. Shoelaces : I own both) and I also use the regular athletic shoe The Brooks Addiction. They worked for me and I feel like I'm walking on clouds. They run around $120 for a pair. I'll never buy another brand of athletic shoe again.
