Because of our crappy economy, I can no longer take out private student loans, which I have done for a few years now.... I get a little bit of money from FAFSA, but obviously not enough. I work as much as possible, but with 8 hr clinics twice a week and about 12-16 hrs. of prep each week for clinic, not to MENTION lecture twice a week and all the assignments, tests and quizes for that, I barely have time to eat, let alone work much.
I am looking for responses from people that have any kind of knowledge of common nursing scholarships, or even companies that are still lending money. I am a 3.2gpa student at an Iowa school. PLEASE HELP, I'M SOOOOO BROKE!
1) the government is not responsible for paying for your school, you are2) our "crappy" economy is only excluding people with sketchy credit from obtaining loans. people with reasonable credit histories and a forseeable way to repay the loans have every door open to them today as they did yesterday.
I agree 100%, especially with #1.

and to the thread starter, i'd look at your own information and where you are securing student loans b/c student loans are basically the one area untouched by the economy right now. are you sure you are indicating the loans are for college? taking out a loan from a promissory through fafsa should be basically guaranteed
Have you tried a personal loan through Prosper?
The way it works, is that you have regular people (like you and me) bidding to loan you money. Some can lend you as little as $50, others as high as $1000+. The amount of the loan and interest are determined by your state of residence... and what you put on your loan request/listing.
If all other options are exhausted, I would really give Prosper a shot. I've tried it and it's great!

Exactly. Banks and Credit unions offer student loans. I don't feel the interest rates are "outrageous" (In fact, I think they are less than car loans). You don't need to have excellent credit, just good to fair. I'm only mentioning this from experience, because prior to nursing school, I was a bank loan officer. There are no banks that I know of ANYWHERE that are not doing these loans. That would be like a hardware store not wanting to sell you nails. Banks make PROFIT on loans, just as any business does selling their merchandise. The government has nothing to do with it.
I don't mean to sound harsh, but to the OP, it is NOT the GOVERNMENT'S /ECONOMY'S fault if you CANNOT get your school financed/paid for, etc. It is your own responsibility. Period. I worked my ass off to get where I am, with my own savings and good credit. I would not ever dream of relying on the government to put me through school.
If you want it bad enough, someone else had a good suggestion... take a few semesters off and work to save for it. Or get those loans if (provided you have decent credit). Most of the time, the payments are very low, at least until you graduate
Best of Luck to You. I hope you can achieve your goal.

This is true.... although I am pursuing my LPN right now, when I was completing my AA degree, my financial aid advisor told me that government secured student loans are guaranteed, regardless of credit history.
I understand some community colleges do not offer student loans, but definitely check with your school's financial aid office to see what options may be available.
To those comments about incurring unreasonable debt, I normally agree. But if this person sees the only way forward is through loans we have to trust her judgement. I see, "small town, no jobs / poor paying jobs, nearest good job market 50-60 miles away with higher cost of living, probably only HS education. She'd probably toil for several years in minimum wage jobs, never get ahead, and never get out of that town or situation."
This is a message board, she's falsely blaming the gov't (which should be addressed), but she's looking for options from others and we should support her.
OP,
Sallie Mae has a "Tuition Answer" loan that has deferred payments but it does build interest during the deferment period. Others have mentioned Chase, and your school may also provide references. What about scholarships ... churches, groups, local hospitals, your school, banks/credit unions, have scholarship programs apply early and apply often.

If you go to Johnson and Johnson web site (the baby powder people) you can find an enormous amount of information regarding scholarships, etc. They advertise on Television all the time regarding nursing. Good site to research for this information in your state. :typing
I live in Michigan and I HAVE to get loans to pay for my schooling. I have 3 children, work, and go to school. My state stopped their private government loans also. So now I have to find another loan to pay for school, and it did state that due to the economy they were stopping the private government loans.
I feel for you and totally understand what you are going through, you cannot work enough to pay for school and support yourself while you are in school, so you need that little bit of extra help!
good luck!
