Our class board scores 41.7%

U.S.A. Alabama

I recently graduated from nursing school( May 03, 2003)- We were all very aware of the very poor education we were receiving-Which is really sad considering we attended a private baptist university. Our instructors treated us as if they were blessing us with their ability to read from a nursing text-This whole nursing school experience was horrible-I constantly questioned why any of us were paying to be abused-These instructor's were anything but christian. Such condescending attitudes-if we questioned any of the tests we were considered to be trouble maker's-How dare the low little nursing student question the knowledge of these instructor's. I do feel very badly for my fellow students that did not pass boards the first time but I do hope the Alabama Board of Nursing takes a long hard look at that entire program. We graduated in the ADN program but we were never required to take pharmacology and we did not have a practicum(I cannot find another ADN program that is lacking those two items) I would be interested in hearing from any other recently graduated R.N.'s in Alabama to see if this is common practice of the ADN programs here?

Sunny,

There is only one.

Years ago they had financial problems and have tried to make up for it by charging an rediculous amount of tuition (higher than ).

A small private Baptist college in Saraland, AL is not anywhere close to Vanderbilt in reputation.

I dont see how they can charge what they do with a straight face!

And on top of it having a low passage rate.

I have never heard of such low board pass rates. Unreal. All ours had pass rates exceeding 90% (both BSN and ADN). Seems to me, some housecleaning is in order; they are taking your money and not dfelivering much in return.

Hi Kyriaka....

Sweet Mother!!! I figured out what college you meant and went to the website.... THAT MUCH for 41%.!!!!

Sunny,

I couldnt remember what they were charging per credit hour (minus fees + they charge for a parking sticker!).

I looked on their web site and couldnt find the price--I am sure it is buried in a mass grave somewhere.

You must remember. Saraland, AL is nothing. It is a blip on an AL interstate!

They must be out of their minds to charge what they do.

There is a local Jesuit college with a 100% passage rate. They have an excellent reputation (for 1/2 the cost) located in the most pristine area of the city not far from the country club and even have their own golf course!

I wouldnt mind going there, but it would add 2 semester since I would need a year of language.

I currently attend Bishop. While I cannot speak for their problems in the past, as I was not a student at that time, I can address the current curriculum. We are required to take HESI exams each semester based on that semester's content. In addition, we take a mid-curricular cumulative HESI and an "exit" HESI. We are required to make 850 on those in order to proceed, either to the next semester or to graduation. I am in my second semester. The 1st semester was not difficult. This semester seems to be "meatier". For FY 03-04, Bishop achieved 95% pass rate.

It seems they have gotten their act together!! That is way up from their 40% in the past.

The people that I know who used to be there, Dr's, and some educators that I know, felt like Bishop was hiring unqualified teachers and that the fault lay with that and not the students.

I'm surprised they have maintained accreditation with such poor pass rates.

Me too. I wonder what the Alabama state BON regulations say about this, if anything. In my state, the school goes on probation if the pass rate dips below 70 percent for two years.

I think part of the problem is that they have been all over the map on scores.

One year it would be 40%, then go up, then go back down. So they were at risk of probation many times, but would always manage to pull the grades back up.

My personal opinion is that it just is too risky. Also, they havent had any problems with their BSN program, just the ADN one (the college offers both).

UoM's exorbitant tuition for an "iffy" ADN program sent me away from them. While Bishop was under scrutiny when I began my pre-reqs, they were showing a trend of improvement, not bouncing about. By the time I was accepted, their pass rates were up enough that they were no longer under "probation". NLN just came about a week or so ago and evaluated the new curriculum that Bishop implemented in their plan to improve their candidates NCLEX success. (The curriculum has been in place 2 years I think. But NLN just now got around to looking at it. I think they wanted to be able to talk to the "first" class educated solely under the new curriculum at the end of their program so that they could look at the WHOLE 5 semesters of it.)

I am curious. Is the ADN program at UM the generic program or the Mobility program for LPN's that had tht low scores at boards?

Do you remember how much it was? I looked at their BSN program some time ago but cannot remember. I just remember it was twice what Springhill is & my mother said something like, "that is more than we paid for your sister to get her Masters at Vanderbilt!".

I dont know why I am thinking $4,000 a semester (John's Hopkins is $10K).

It's right at $4k per semester, which is ridiculous for a 42% pass rate!

It doesn't matter if they are Generic track or Mobility track. They all graduate with an ADN, and therefore their pass/fail rate is included under the ADN program's numbers.
