OU ABSN Interviews for May 2011 Cohort

Published

Hi guys! Interviews started today for the May 2011 cohort, and I think I was one of the first few to interview. I know we can't talk about specific questions that were asked during the interview, but I just wanted to see if anyone would like to share their reactions/experience here.

I personally felt pretty good, I did get one "I love your answer!" so that made me feel a little more secure:D since I felt like I stumbled on this one other question. I did feel a little rushed since they told me the interview would be super short right in the beginning  (did anyone else feel that way?) I didn't get a clear answer on where we will be having clinicals/classes though....

I'm sure it will be another month after interviews end until we all get mailed acceptance letters.

Any thoughts you would like to share?.....

I really hope you get in, it sounds well deserved! This is my first attempt at applying, although I have been working toward this career change for 5 years now. I interviewed the week of July 19th, so I have been waiting a while now!!

Thanks. :) I really hope I get in. I want it really bad. You've been waiting about a month already. It's only been about 3 weeks and I'm going crazy. I hope you have a good time up north. And I hope even more that our letters arrive tomorrow! ;)

Hi All,

@ evansmom,

Do the other programs have a similar process as OU or are they different? I'm thinking in my mind that different people interviewed different candidates - so maybe the first set of interviewers made their decisions with their candidates and sent out those letters....

I can't figure this out - if they made all decisions for the class - then why wouldn't they send out all letters at once (with rejections as well) - why would they make us wait to plan our futures? What scares me is the deposit date of August 27....they surely have to give us time (if we were accepted in the program) to turn in our deposits. As the days go by, I am accepting defeat and planning the future. I will pursue other opportunities and evansmom - if it doesn't happen don't give up!! Keep trying to pursue your dreams! I hope you get in too!

Nothing in the mail for me yesterday. I applied to U of M Ann Arbor in Feb. of this year and had the absolute worst experience. They kept failing to get/find/enter in my transcripts in their system after having them mailed twice and then hand-delivering them to the undergraduate office in snow storm no less. Finally in May they acknowledged my transcripts were not complete and that they would look at my application and call me back personally. Friends from classes I was taking at Schoolcraft told me their rejection letters indicated that all of the spots were filled at that time.

I got a rejection letter a week later (no personal call) and when I followed up was told my

transcripts were not complete.

My OU advisor seemed to be very positive about me getting in and I am now becoming

concerned after reading everyones posts combined with the fact that I interviewed on 7/15.

Best of luck today to all!

@Dandy778 - No, in my experience the application process has been different. At University of Detroit Mercy, they won't even consider your application if your GPA is below a 3.25 from your graduating institution. In my case, I went to a junior college before I went to university and I only has a 3.0 at university. I was initially told that they would consider my application, but once it came down to it, the Dean of Nursing said no. At EMU, they do a point system. It is based on your GPA, TEAS scores and whether or not you took classes at their school. They do not do interviews. Their decisions are based on what you look like on paper. I thought I actually had a decent chance of getting in there, but I was wrong. Like nnarod, I had a horrible experience with UofM. They too misplaced my transcripts. They told me that they put it in another person's file with my same name and birthdate. PLEASE!!!! I so didn't buy that. I turned in my application last September (1 year ago) and didn't hear from them until MAY of this year. It was crap. After all that, I was completely rejected from the school. They post their decisions online, but I don't understand why. If you are accepted, you receive a link to a congratulatory page, but if you are rejected, you receive a message that says "A decision will be arriving in the mail". If you would post that, why not just post the rejection. Stupid, in my opinion. Whatever. I didn't apply to Wayne State because they too do a point system type thing, and I would have been given the least amount of points possible because I didn't take classes there and because I am not from the state of Michigan (you receive less points if you are from out of state ultimately). I figured it wasn't worth the time, heartache and disappointment. I didn't apply to traditional nursing programs because so many of them have such long waitlists, like Schoolcraft. Their earliest start date is 2013, I think.

I don't think they had different interviewers for the time of day. AdamsMaMi was the interview right before mine and has already received a letter. I know the two of us had the same interviewers. So, I am not expecting good news, but I wish a letter would arrive already so I can get over it. Ugh.

Hi everyone,

I know many of you are getting really discouraged and I know how you feel. I too was rejected at several schools. I began to question myself even though I got mostly A's in pre-reqs. Am I cut out for this or not?? Then good news...

I got my acceptance to Oakland and declined several other programs. The reason I loved Oakland is they to me were the least political and take a holistic approach to the application process. I was impressed with them from Day 1. My point is don't get down on yourselves. I know a number of my friends who got rejected a few times before they got accepted(people with high GPA's and years of NA experience). The point is if this is truly your passion, don't quit. You will get in eventually!!! At Oakland, grades are important -don't get me wrong. But I found they took stock into the goal statement and interview. Also, I volunteered for a year at a hospital which was rewarding experience. It gives you a sense if being in a hospital is right for you and will definitely set you apart in the application process.

If many of you interviewed in mid July, you will hear this week. I know our class, it seemed like people heard over a span of about 5-7 days. So don't get caught up if you interviewed first or last. I think the interviewer will either recommend you or not. The interview is key(in my opinion) and if it wasn't they wouldn't spend the time to do them. It can make or break an application so that's why I always stressed to students on this site to show your passion and commitment to nursing and why you want to be one.

You would be surprised how many can't answer why they want to be a nurse.lol.

In closing, don't give up on nursing. With only 25-30 % acceptance to most programs, the odds are difficult but keep at it. You will get in eventually. Like me, you will find the BS at some schools but then you will be refreshed to find schools like Oakland, Trust me. I am not a 4.0 student but I did the little things that I think made the difference.

Best wishes and I hope to hear good news for those waiting.

No letter for me today. :( I just don't know. I would guess if we don't hear by Saturday that it is going to be a no. They would give us more than 4 business days to send in the deposit, wouldn't they?

Nothing again for me. Does anyone know or heard of anyone receiving a rejection letter?

Hi, based on when you guys interviewed, I think it's too early to get worried. I interviewed on March 2nd and didn't get my letter until April 3rd. Some people got their letters (rejections included) several days before me. So I think it will take a month before final decisions are made. I know for a fact they don't send them all out at the same time. I live in Oakland county and I got my letter 3 or 4 days after others who lived outside the area. But my guess is since some have already received responses, you will get something this week. Don't get caught up on the August 27th date - I think they give about 10-14 days after letters are mailed. So the dates may vary from student to student.

Clarification: It's about a month until decision letters are mailed: I interviewed on March 2nd - my letter was dated March 31. I didn't get it until April 3rd. Why don't one of you call the nursing school?? It can't hurt.

Thanks again, ejcl68 for the reassurance. We all appreciate it. :) It helps us to stay positive.

I am so sorry you haven't heard yet but don't take it as a negative, they may have let me know so fast b/c I have finished all my coursework already (not sure how many more classes you all need to take) so the plan of study they write up didn't need to be re-done that is pretty easy for them right?

Also, I just heard what was it a week ago so it hasn't been that long, and I am sure you will get a different date for your deposit.

I also had a bad experience with U of M, I only applied to U of M and Oakland, wayne state was terrible in terms of what they would accept in prereqs basically none of my credits would be accepted and at their information session they told us that Oakland will accept you b/c it is easy to get in that program and not highly regarded but put you on the waitlist for 3 years until clinicals start so I said wait a minute that is not true you shouldn't be telling people the wrong info about other programs so I felt that was really unprofessional and forget applying there, but anyways after waiting 7 months to hear a decision U of M put me on the waitlist and told me I probably wouldn't get in since my undergrad was at U of M and they were looking for diversity??

Good luck ladies...
