Other Uses of Ritalin?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

A nurse friend of mine told me that she is noticing that patients with GI issues are being prescribed Ritalin more often. She searched her drug guides and cannot figure out why they are doing this. I did the same, don't see the reason. Has anyone of you seen this, and if so, do you know why (and of course, share what you know). Thanks, guys.

Interesting reponses! Thanks. I will ask my friend what she is noticing, so that we can toss this around a bit more. I'll also try and ask one of the doctors I know and see what she says.

I used it in HCV treatment a little for fatigue but its a pain to prescribe. It really doesn't have enough GI side effects unless you get to really high doses to work for anything else. I too would be interested in this.

I'll inquire next week. The doctor I get along with the most will be back to work on Monday, and she loves to answer my insane questions. I'll ask my friend this weekend to tell me more details about her patients that were prescribed ritalin in her unit so that I can sort of present a case to this doctor. And, I'll be sure to share it on this thread, whether it actually exists or not. I am wondering, now, if there were other things that she was not focusing on when we were throwing our insane theories around.

Thanks for the interest!

given in people w/fatigue d/t to hep c, ca tx,

i know that it can be abused also

Ritalin also has an adjunctive role in the treatment of bulimia at times, and some of those patients will end up with GI issues related to the vomiting.

I don't know, but perhaps follow this lead...

Ritalin contains methanol which breaks down in the body to formaldehyde, which in turns breaks down to formate or formic acid. This creates an ACIDOSIS, which will in turn create organ failures of all kinds. Perhaps their giving it them to kill them?

Do you care to back up your conspiracy theory with some kind of valid evidence/research?

By the way all medications can basically be considered poisonous to the body even herbal supplements have side effects.

the active ingredient methylphenidate breaks down into ritalinic acid and alpha-2-piperdine acetic acid. There are a few other active metabolites, but those account for more than 85% of the drug. These are fairly easily eliminated renally as you can see for the pharmokinetic profiles. Also, since you are on a nursing board, you are undoubtedly aware that for the most part ingested acids do not cause ACIDOSIS.
