I prefer about 1 week of orientation. show me where the equipment and supplies are, how to print/access preference cards.... Im good.... Ill just go on the assumption that the week of orientation includes computer access and being shown where to pull up all necesary results/documents....
I have also seen the other end of the spectrum where people take a SOLID 3 months orientation that came in as a VERY experienced OR RN.... lol.... I dont get it but whatever.....
If you have a number of years then a few weeks should be enough to get you up and running and other things will come as you work. All people have a comfort level so I don't fault them if they need a little more time. I would rather they feel good about things than to comtinue to tell them over and over about stuff. Think about this rather than to continue to struggle.
It's different everywhere! I have traveled in the OR for the last 8 to 10 yrs and have had anywhere from 1 wk orientation to "go get your C/S patient" down that hall....with the thought that you are experienced, you don't need training...duh
I interviewed with a hospital in GA and was told orientation would be 2 wks as I am an experienced OR RN...
As an OR nurse who spent over 10 yrs in one facility before moving to a new facility. I got about 3.5 months of orientation at the new place--2 weeks general hospital/nursing orientation. then dept/OR specific-the first 2 wks i did cases I was familiar with to learn the basics of paperwork/process/supplies/etc. Then I spent the last 2 months or so orienting to services/cases I had very limited experience with.

How long do o.r. nurses with experience orientate for on the average at your place. My new place also does ortho, which I have never done. Just curious.
