Ohsu

U.S.A. Oregon

Specializes in CICu, ICU, med-surg.

Hi all. I've applied for two new graduate internships at OHSU in Portland. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me a little bit about this place. I've heard that they are unionized and that it's a pretty good place to work. Just looking for some more opinions. Anyone have experience with the internship programs? Also, does anyone happen to know how much they typically pay? None of the nursing job descriptions I've seen list the salary.

Appreciate any information you can provide. Hopefully I'll be joining you all in Oregon later this year!

Specializes in Surgical.

It is is good place to work! And Portland is a great city.

One big problem though is parking. I would definately consider riding the bus.

The hospital is on a hill with a great view of the area. I think you'll be impressed.

Thanks for the info. Do you work at OHSU?

I visited Portland for a few days last week and just loved the city. The weather was great (not a drop of rain!). There seems to be a lot of construction going on at OHSU, so I was wondering if parking could be a big issue. Public transportation seems pretty good, so I'll have to look into it.

Thanks again.

Parking is definitely an issue, basically there is no parking. I've heard there there is about 10,000 employees for around 1,000 parking spaces. Could be slight exageration but you get the point. I volunteer in the ER and I'm given a pass to park on the days that I work but thats only because I'm working for free. I know that most people either ride the bus or pay to park somewhere else and catch the bus up the hill. The public transportation is very good in Portland so if you don't mind riding the bus you shouldn't have a problem getting to work. I was born and raised on the Oregon coast and moved up here to go to school just about a year ago. I absolutely love it! Fortunately you were visiting when the weather was nice but this weather we are experiencing isn't the norm. We usually get rain off and on from November through May. Today it is supposed to be 73 which is a record high! If you can handle the rain then I'm sure you will really enjoy living in Portland :) .

:chuckle Everyone I spoke to while I was there warned me that the weather was unusual!

I'm very excited about moving there. I was told by the recruiter at OHSU that I should hear from someone within the next week regarding the internships I applied for. Keeping my fingers crossed...

Thanks for all the great info!

ok just had to caution you about the "not a drop of rain" thing. We are having a VERY unusual winter in that it has been sunny and dry for the most part. I love our area, but if you move here be prepared that normally it is cloudy and or rainy most of the winter -mid may (with a few breaks for sun of course but generally its rainy.) But i agree portland is a great place! and there are lots of suburbs around that are less expensive to live in if that is an issue. I am still a undergrad student so can't comment on your program but as i am going for my BSN, OHSU would be the top choice for me except for the parking and traffic issue (i am coming from vancouver, the way the flow of traffic does so it's an issue). Have you checked their website?

oops saw that others already warned you about the weather! lol

Yeah, I realize the weather was unusual. Thanks for the warning.

I have read OHSU's website. I've gotten pretty much all I can from it. I hope to hear from someone this week about the internships, so we'll see. Appreciate all the info!

BTW, what school are you going to and when do you graduate? I'm getting my BSN from Florida State University. Graduate April 30th.

currently at Clark College in Vancouver and will probably finish my ADN there (i start the nursing part next school year) then transfer to WSU immediately after to finish out the BSN. I would love to go to OHSU, but because i live in vancouver (basically a suburb of Portland, even though it is WA) it is a lot more of a hassle with preschool for my daughter, parking, traffic etc... My friend is in her first year there and LOVES it!
