Nursing shortage in Portland/Vancoover????

U.S.A. Oregon

Hi all!! I am just about half way done with my program, will graduate in May 2006 provided all goes well. I am currently in Anchorage Alaska but want to move back "home" to Portland when I get done. My husband :kiss is doing pre-reqs for PT, wants to go to Northern Pacific University. I have heard conflicting reports about nursing jobs in Portland...what is the market like? I really really want to get a job at St. Vincents in SW. ANy info on that facility??

Anything is appreciated!

Michelle

PS...I attended Clackamas CC in 1996-7, did anyone go to that nursing program during those years?? :nono:

Specializes in CICu, ICU, med-surg.

I'm graduating next month and am planning on moving to Portland in June. I've looked at just about every facility in that area. My impression has been that there isn't as great of a shortage in Portland/Vancouver as there is in many other parts of the country. As for St. Vincents, I've heard good things and I know they have a new graduate residency program. There are also new grad programs at OHSU and Legacy.

Hi~

I'm a nursing student at Clark :nono: graduating in June 06. Legacy is building a new hospital in Salmon Creek in Vancouver. I think that will change the dynamic in Vancouver quite a bit~SWMC will suddenly have competition. Don't know how it will affect the PDX labor market.

You might want to check out Legacy and SWMC, work there until you can get what you can get into St. Vincent.

just thought i would agree with this as SWMC won't be the only game in town after this summer. I start the nursing program at Clark next year (assuming they don't DRASTICALLY change the point process! ) and am very happy that there will be another hospital around to look into.

p.s. I am so pissed that i no longer feel "guaranteed" to make selection even with my 7 points that i worked fulltime the past 1.5 yrs to acheive and maintain! :angryfire

SMK1....can I ask what you mean by "guaranteed to make selection?" Is Clark in Portland? My sister is in Portland currentlyworking on pre-reqs, she is having a hard time knowing where/how to apply given the point/lottery system at many of the schools. Any advice?

Is this hospital opened yet? I have gone to their site, and see job listings. But am confused if they are functional yet, can anyone advise. I am wanting to move to area in May or june.

Specializes in Geriatrics/Alzheimer's.

The new hospital in Vancouver, Wa is suppose to open this summer, in June or July, I think.
