Oregon Health and Science University 2014 cohort

Published

Hello,

I thought I'd start a thread about anyone currently applying to any of the OHSU Nursing programs for the 2014 cohort. I currently have three applications in with them: Accelerated BSN to MSN: Psychiatric Mental Health, Accelerated BSN, and the traditional BSN Program. Has anyone had any word from them? I know that the Accel. programs have closed both their applications. Any word on interviews or scheduling?

I am currently finishing up my preqs at PCC. I am working full-time and am just flustered. I hate not knowing anything with regard to where I stand or what type of candidate they are looking for.

Does anyone else feel similarly?

How did you answer your essay questions?

I'm curious for knowledge to see if I made the boat or missed it completely.

Those still waiting, are you hoping to get into the accelerated program or the 3 year? We have until the 15th of next month to send in the deposit for the 3 year. I am not certain, but I think the deadline to accept has passed for the accelerated program.

I meant to mention this in my original post. I am an alternate for the ABSN program. The situation gets more confusing, because for us alternates, we are eligible for spots in both the summer and fall 2014 cohorts... Bleargh. Has anyone heard from the admissions office regarding their recent requests for information?

So...I emailed the admissions office on Monday with no reply. As this waiting game is the worst, I called them yesterday afternoon. The admissions staff person told me that all spots in the Summer and Fall ABSN cohorts are currently filled. However, they take people from the alternate list each year and its not unlikely for people to drop from the program as we get closer to the start date.

If I could go back and talk to her again I would ask for clarification on what she meant by all spots are "filled". Not sure if this means they've received deposits for everyone or if it means they're full, but still pending receipt of deposit. Conceivably we could be waiting until September to find out if we get off the alternate list for the fall cohort :-(

**I'm a highly likely alternate for the ABSN program.

@Thihan --My humble opinion is that you go with Linfield. I understand where you are coming from in terms of having a degree from OHSU, but don't let subjectivity get in your way of objectivity--particularly when it means that you can get to your goals in half the time. What is great about your situation is that Linfield also has a great reputation. I had a hard time deciding between OHSU and Linfield's ABSN-- I just about cried when I declined Linfield, but I knew my goals were more in line with OHSU. With that being said, if I were in your shoes, I would accept Linfield and leave OHSU for my future advanced degree goals :)

I am not only speaking as a student but as a career counselor (my present profession)

Thank you for your input VonE! It is a very difficult decision to make. I've been collecting information/opinions from others in the field, friends, family while trying to listen to my gut. The thing is, that they each have their different virtues... my intestines haven't voiced itself yet :roflmao: A friend who's been a nurse for 20+ years stated that she believes that OHSU's externship in the last year of the 3yr program is well worth the added time. I like the idea of working internationally and she confirmed that clinicals at OHSU would provide a bigger scope of trauma cases. According to her, if one was sure they want to work with peds or geriatrics, Linfield clinicals do a fine job with preparation. I welcome and appreciate additional outlooks on choosing between ABSN at Linfield or 3 yr BSN at OHSU.

I just sent in my deposit for a spot in OHSU's 3-yr BSN program. I am excited to start in September. Congrats to everyone else who got in, and good luck to those who are wait-listed and still waiting... Cannot wait to meet fellow students, and begin the nursing school challenge in September. Am oh-so-nervous and mind-bogglingly excited.

I just sent mine in over the weekend! So exciteddddd!!!!! Between now and fall, I am planning a road trip and lots of rest. I am nervous too! I'm trying to get all of my immunization stuff taken care of and it is becoming much more of a hassle than I care for. I may have to get them done again- but that's okay. I at least have the hep series taken care of already. My childhood shot records are lost in the 80s.

I am dorkishly excited to get my school supplies/scrubs/etc.

Received and automated email from OHSU admissions yesterday just restating that all positions for the ABSN are currently full, but my alternate status will remain active if anyone is to drop out between now and when classes start.

Anyone else have any other information regarding the ABSN admissions?

MrBuckeye,

I'm sorry to hear you received the same email I did. I was hoping some of the other "Highly Likely" candidates on this message board got in. Perhaps a few did.

I called the admissions office yesterday, and gleaned a little information from the staff person I spoke with. She said they took 12 people from the wait list into the summer cohort, 4 into the fall cohort. I must admit I found this reveal to be slightly frustrating, I just found myself pondering how many "highly likely" people there were?!

I also asked her if I could discuss my application, and how I might make myself more desirable for the 2015 application cycle. She told me we could have that conversation, but we should wait until I am certain I am not getting a spot. If I had been thinking a little more clearly I would have insisted on the conversation in order to plan on re-taking any classes.

Thinking of resorting to prayer or animal sacrifice,

DTHightower - Thank you for the additional information. My confusion lies not only with how many people were "highly likely", but how many of the people did they take off the "waitlist" that were in need of switching from one cohort to the other?

I know those that were accepted into Summer and needed to get into Fall instead (due to prereqs, family issues, etc) were put on the waitlist until a spot opened up. So, those people were obviously "highly likely" and put on the list above any of us.

Who knows what will happen....fingers still crossed. Like I said before, we could get calls in September to get into the Fall cohort. Although, if I have to wait that long to find out anything definitive I may have pulled all of my hair out.

I'm sorry you guys are having to go through this. The area community colleges have yet to call anyone from their wait list as well- so perhaps students hoping for a different school have accepted a spot just in case.

Hello everyone, I just received an email and call from the OHSU main office offering me a spot in the ABSN program in Ashland. I must admit I am pretty stoked to get the offer and ready to get started. A quick question for the other applicatnts, how long does it take to complete the compliance materials, I read in one of the included pamphlets that the background check takes upt to 12 weeks, is that correct, if that is right, I will be cutting it close to get everything done before class begins. See you all in a month. Oh yeah, if you are still an alternate don't give up hope, I was pretty bummed but then I got the call, it can happen for you guys too.
