I am thinking of moving my family to Texas.

My brother lives in Plano and I have been nothing but impressed everytime I visit.

I am originally from California and used to living close to water and hills and would love to find somewhere that has both.

I have a family with three children so would like to live in a quite area with nice schools. I am an RN and my wife is an EMT so it would also be nice to be around a good hospital and EMS system with more than one or two hopsitals that dominate.

We are thinking about Austin. Galveston and Corpus Cristy are prospects but Ive been suprised to hear from people that Galveston and Corpus both have a lot of crime. Strange considering that both are right on the coast.

We love to sail and swim, with the occasional fishing and water skiing-

Thanks in advance

It is true Galveston and CC have crime. My guess is they are like other cities in which you have to know what area of the city is the safest. These days I am not sure there is in any city.

The beach is better in CC than Galveston. I live in Houston and my sister lives in Rockport, which is east of CC. If you chose either of these towns I think you would be happier living in a smaller town nearby the city you work.

My other sister lives in Dallas. Plano is very nice and offers the hills that interest you. I have heard the nice areas of the city are pricey but probably not compared to California.

Many Texans consider Austin very nice for its hills and because it is a smaller city compared to Houston or Dallas. Travis Lake, Canyon Lake, New Braunfels and San Antonio are close to Austin and offer the hills and water you mentioned.

My suggestion would be to visit the areas you are considering and talk to realtors as though you are moving to that location. The realtors are knowledgable in their respective cities regarding crime areas and the best places to live.

Best of Luck,

Joy

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I'll just have to drive to Austin to see for myself. I'm partcicularly interested in how hospitals treat their nurses of course. And Docs too.

We thought of Tyler too, after seeing the dream home thing on HGTV. Im in the military too but dont mind driving distance to be in a kick butt unit-

Austin is awesome i love it there... i live in houston and one day hope to move out that way!!!!

I know it is expensive to live in Austin. My cousin lives in New Braunfels. It is located about halfway between Austin and San Antonio. It is considered the Hill Country and has that "small town" atmosphere that would be great for kids. I read one of the other posts about the Guadalupe river- makes me want to jump in my car and drive there (I live closer to Houston-unfortunately). They also have the Comal river- just as beautiful. Lots of water activities around that area- especially toobing/rafting in the rivers. That area of Texas has a really laid back lifestyle! You could commute to either San Antonio or Austin.

Haha, I didn't appreciate Austin until I moved to Houston! Haha!

What do you consider pays well? I hope nothing less than $22-23/ hr. FYI, I am looking to move to Texas, but I want to live in houston because of its proximity to the hospitals and location to entertainment. I would make the sacrifice and live in Galveston if the price is right!

thanks

I am originally from Kerrville, the heart of the hill country. It's a beautiful area surrounded by hills with the Guadalupe River running through it. It's approximately one hour from San Antonio, 1 1/2 from Austin & 3 from Corpus Christi. Centrally located in southern Texas. There is a hospital in Kerrville & one in Fredericksburg, both of which I've worked in. Be wary of relocating to Fredericksburg, though. They like all the visitors but like for them to go home. My son lives in Tyler in northeast Tx. It's a growing area with several hospitals within Tyler and surrounding communities. Though I now live in Kentucky, my heart remains in the Great Lone Star State!! Good luck with your search.

I agree, this area is beuatiful. I live in Smithson Valley area (north of San Antonio). This area has hills and water and is breath taking. Plus the weather is awesome. There are a lot of people moving here from California.

Good luck!

I'm fixxing to graduate in April from UTMB located in galveston, TExas. I was born here, and lived on the island many years, and when I lived on the mainland, it was 15min away. I feel I know Galveston pretty good, and yes it has some dirty, run down parts but the hsitory and character in Galveston far out beats all the other areas around. There are many aspects of galveston, historic district, the homes on the water or canal, the beach(no where near Cali) and the Universities. I think the island is a wonderful place to live, shopping sucks, but its isolated away from the hussle of a larger city, and whether people acknowledge it or not, the seawall is very toursist friendly and looks alot better than Daytona Beach, FL.- their beaches. Also, UTMB pays very well for new grads and I LOVE UTMB>

I know this is on old thread but I wanted to say that I really liked Galveston too. I graduate in August and my dh and I have decided to move from las vegas to texas. We flew out and looked at the houston area, galveston, and san antonio. We both fell in love with galveston. Alot of the older buildings have charm, we could live within walking distance of the beach, our jobs, and the Strand. The cost of living is soooo much less. And they are actually starting new grads out at pretty much the same wage as new grads in lv with a huge shift diff ($4-5 for nights). As for crime, we went through some of the "bad" sections. On foot. I felt completely safe. Of course I'm used to lv where you could get randomly shot just walking into the grocery store. I'm working with the nurse recruiter at UTMB now so that we can make the move as soon after graduation as possible.

D:yeah:

Austin is beautiful area, I don't care for the city, too many people hanging out on corners begging money/selling items. Lots of Illegal Aliens there. I spent last summer working there, I am from Dallas area.

Tyler is beautiful as well, I don't know much about it.

Galveston/Corpus, OK to visit. Not sure I would live there.

Plano is very nice, It does have small area off Interstate 75/ 15th street area that is over populated with Illegal, but the rest of the area is nice and clean.

Frisco very close to Plano is another option to live in. If you happen to move to the Dallas Area I suggest to look on the North Side of Dallas (Plano/Frisco/Allen/McKinney) area.

I live in Irving Texas, and we have been ran over and invaded by Illegal Aliens.

From my research, IF you get in the 170,000 to 200,000 price range and above, then you will have a great neighborhood.

And coming from Cali, You will be amazed at how much house you can buy in Dallas / Ft Worth area for you money.

I think I can help in a couple of areas. I am currently a Realtor who has always wanted to be a nurse. Couldn't afford to not work back when I was in college the first time. So I got into real estate and have been doing that for several years now & have my own little company. After graduating with a different degree, I'm now starting pre-reqs and planning to change careers in the next couple of years an then moving on to graduate school to get an advanced nursing degree. I like real estate in many ways, but want something more stable with a more predictable schedule moving into my 30s.

At any rate, I have lived in Austin, East Texas and in the DFW area. If you enjoy hills and water, Austin and surrounding hill country areas (in my opinion) can't be beat in Texas. People are pretty laid back and the area is just beautiful. Housing is getting more expensive there again due to its popularity, but there is still affordable housing. Just like in DFW....there are lots of different areas. Some have more affordable housing than others - depends on what you want. I live on the Ft. Worth side of DFW. Lived in Dallas, but it wasn't for me. Nothing wrong with it...I just prefer Fort Worth. I have never lived in Galveston, but have visted and have just never had a remote desire to live there. But I'm sure if you grew up there, you are more familiar with some of the nicer things about Galveston. Too humid for me! : )

In East Texas, I think Tyler is a great city. It's relatively close to Dallas if you need to be in DFW for something, it has lots of shopping, some beautiful scenery, lots of good medical facilities (from what I hear) but you still get a smaller town feeling and a sense of community. If I was going to live in East Texas again, I would move to Tyler. My personal plan is to retain my business, work on getting into nursing school, getting some experience as a new nurse in one of the better DFW teaching hospitals, and THEN ultimately moving back to Austin. It is my dream to live there again! If I can answer any questions about these areas since I have lived in most of them, please let me know!
