Opinions on Husson University for FNP

Published

Hello!

I am starting Husson University online for my FNP on May 11th. I have done research for months on different programs, and Husson doesn't have too many reviews; however, the ones they do have are excellent. Tuition is very affordable ($600 some a credit). They are located in Maine, and there are 2 on campus requirements. You have to attend twice for hands on "immersion" experience. Their program looks really good and I am excited to start. They do not find your clinicals for you, but they have a clinical coordinator that can assist you if need be. I will have a year before I begin clinicals so I figure that gives me enough time to look. Anyone have any thoughts on this school?

Thank you!

I graduate in August now. Yes the monitored exams started last semester, but it's not too bad because I only have 2 exams a semester. If it was often, I could see it being an issue though.

RedGlitter,

Hopefully, I'll start the postmaster's PMHNP certificate program at Husson in the Fall. How interactive is the online program? Weekly zoom meetings? Thanks so much!

Hi I would to know  more about the program for those already in it. I applied for the fall PMHNP program and got accepted but am trying to decide between other programs. How are the classes like? Are Professors easily accessible? What does each class comprise of, quizzes, exams, discussion board? Are the exams proctored for each class also? How is everyone liking the program? Thanks and hoping to hear from someone.

Classes are not hard if you plan out your time and do something every day. All classes are fully online. On the 1st day of the class, you would be given scheduled exam days and if you work m-f 8 to 5 you would be expected to take days off just for the exams. All exams are monitored through zoom, so you would have to set up 2 devices 1 for the professor to monitor you and another to take the exam. in every class, you would have a discussion board. In some classes, you would have to do special projects like scientific posters and in other classes, you would have a quiz each week plus an exam every 4 or 8 weeks. In some classes, there are 2 or 4 exams worth 50% of your final grade.  Clinical OUTPATIENT only. You would NOT be allowed to do inpatient clinics. You are responsible for finding clinical yourself. NPhub will charge you a $12+ service fee. There are 600 clinical hours. Professors are really good at connecting with their students. Students like the program. The hardest part of the program is finding clinical. You would have to reach out to 40+ places to find clinical. Exams are proctored and quizess are not proctored.

Some students working 5 days a week, so they hate taking time off just to take exams, because most of the time exam scheduled on Thursday or Friday at 10 am or 1 pm.

Zoom meeting is offered just for review for the exam. Otherwise a lot of weekly discussions.

Hi thank you so much for responding. Are there actual lectures for each classes or its all just self taught? Do the professors outline like what materials to study for the exams and whatnot or you are just required to read the assigned chapters without any guidance?

How long is the program for? I saw 30 months and then I saw accelerated for 24 months? Are students able to take a certain no of classes each term?

You have flexibility in number of classes you would like to take each semester, so you cab be done with school in 24 months. If you choose to take just 1 to 2 classes per semester it would take you 30 months. In some classess lectures has been recorded LONG LONG LONG time ago, and they just used over and over again each semester. Quality of some audio is low, so each semester students asking to re-record this audio's ? You would be expected to reach 100 pages each week, Youtube is helping a lot. I believe that this program mostly self taught, but on quized and exams information what you need to know is reinforced. Exam outline is provided but it is not very helpful because they just list every topic we study in the class. Yes, they do not care about us like professors in BSN nursing school, but I feel like their case studies and quizles help you to learn what you must for the board exam. I use picmonic, and Youtube a lot. The hardest part of the school is clinicals.

It is okay program, they are make sure to provide you with everything what you need to know in order to pass your boards in the end. All instructors are great, mostly FNP for many years. They love to record lecture once and re-use it for many years. Pharm and a/p class lectures are super old, each semester students ask professor to record them again, because it is hard to hear lectures.

They do not help to find clinical sites, plus they have only 1 person who is in charge of setting up agreements between clinical sites and school plus she has to do other job for a a few days a week, so it take 1 to 2 weeks to get respond to your question.

If you choose to attend husson start looking for clinicals at least 12 months in advance I spoke to over 200 practices and had to pay special company to get help with clinical placement. I paid $12,000 for my clinical hours to agencies and $5000-$8,000 for hotels and gas.

OMG. That’s Rediculous! Unfortunately I feel like a lot of schools are heading toward making you find your own clinicals. Do you know how much the program is ? Also, how many hours a week do you think you dedicate to it? What are the classes like?

thank you so much for your response !
