Opinions on Excelsior College?

Nursing Students LPN-RN

Published

I'm currently finishing up my LPN program, and I want to start taking excelsior tests. I already have a lot of prereqs done, like english 101-102, microbiology, speech, and some other stuff that can apply as elective credits.

I'm just looking for some good advice or any "heads up" someone can give me about excelsior.

i had to send a copy of my license to ec... but you should be able to give them your number (it ask for it on the app) and then send them a copy when you get it...you apply first, they look at your transcripts this takes about 2 weeks , you get a unofficial evaluation ..then you enroll and i did mine online and it took about 5 days to get my " congratulations on being accepted to excelsior nursing program"..which i got today...yeah for me anyway don't wait around get things to them or you will be facing all the changes....

Can you tell me more on how the CPNE eligibility & how the experience & grading was on this? I am now exploring my options on RN programs, but Excelsior sounds like it might be the one for me.

Thanks

I have been an LPN for 10+ years, and am tired of not

getting the jobs I want, and am certainly knowledgable and able to do,

so I am going back to get the BSN from Excelcior.

I have heard from others that either this program, or the one from University of Indiana is good...if you are disciplined enough to study

independantly.

I read in their brochure, that they will be Title IV financial aid

qualifying as of 2007-2008--meaning you can get financial aid for

attending there...but the code they listed is not valid, and also they don't show up on the code list at FAFSA website.

Does anyone know the deal on that?

as a lvnpn you cannot obtain a bsn from ec. they only have a rn to bsn program. i have never heard of university of indiana , now there is a indiana state university that has a lvn to bsn program via distance learning.

I was a practicing LPN for 7 years before signing up with Excelsior. I also had alot of the prereqs behind me. I had my NCs to take, gerontology, ethics (upper and lowerclass), psyc, and the online computer class. I finished the classes in a little over a year. I tried to take a test every 2-4 weeks. My LPN experience came in handy at my weekend CPNE. At the hospital where I work LPNs do the same job as RNs therefore education did not seem to matter. And I passed NCLEX just like the nursing students enrolled in a classroom nursing school.

I took several excelsior tests prior to applying to the school.

I too tried to enter the FAFSA Code for Excelsior and it is not in their list either, anyone know what's up on that?

I am new to allnurses.com, but I read your comments in reference to the Excelsior program and I totally agree with you. Once you get the foundation the rest is up to you. I work with nurses who graduated from technical schools with all the clinical experience and it was very frightening. It is what you make of it. Only you can determine whether your going to be a scary nurse or a good nurse. I'm about to take my last NC exam with Excelsior and get ready for the CPNE. I've enjoyed the program and I absolutely love the school. I did it at my own pace with another LPN that I work with and we completed the program in about 12months. So again, it's what you make it. Keep your nose in the books and stay focus. The practice exams were wonderful and purchasing the books helped a lot. Don't let people sway you. This was to leeae85.

Ericenferno said it very well regarding clinicals. Also, you are also already an EMT or LPN or have experience to even enter the program. If you are an LPN already, you've had clinical experience and RNs and LPNs do basically the same things other than just a few things(i.e. IV Push, hanging blood) But you have to practice those things at home before the CPNE. And they're not going to pass you if you can't do them. - Trust me if you can get through all the Nursing Concepts and the CPNE you are a REAL RN!! It's far from easy! You really have to be competent.

I have to say that if it weren't for Excelsior, I wouldn't have been able to finish my nursing education. I, like you, had many of the pre-requisites done due to an undergrad degree. I also had newborn twin boys and a three year old:uhoh3:! Excelsior was wonderful in that it enabled me to study at night while the babies slept and complete the program at my own pace. I completed the program, from start to finish, in under 1 year. Like other posters have pointed out, the biggest wait was between finishing the Nursing Concepts exams and the CPNE, in my case it the earliest date I could get was 6 months. It really is a great program for those who need flexibility and I highly recommend it.
