Opinions on Excelsior College?

I'm currently finishing up my LPN program, and I want to start taking excelsior tests. I already have a lot of prereqs done, like english 101-102, microbiology, speech, and some other stuff that can apply as elective credits.

I'm just looking for some good advice or any "heads up" someone can give me about excelsior.

actually you just need to know the critical elements most of the cpne guidebook can be thrown into the trash. just use the step by step criteria forntwards and backwards and anyone can pass the cpne.

first thing, is it is not clinicals. it is a 2.5 day clinical evaluation. the evaluation consist of patient care situations that you must pass completely with no assist from the instructors. you have to have significant clinical experience to pass the exam.

this is of course, my experience, but i will say that if i had never been on a floor before the cpne, i would not have passed, no matter how well i knew the critical elements. my first pt. required a great deal of nursing care, which i based on my clinical experience as a lpn. your experience of course, might differ, but why chance the 1750.00 by just studying the critical elements and not reviewing any skills? seems foolish.

The CPNE is my only hold back I want to do excelsior so I can be a RN in a year but that scary CPNE. I guess its only scary if you make it that way. Even if you have 10, 20 or plus years experience that can hurt you too b/c you know short-cuts and they want it done by the books. Has anybody who has taken the CPNE failed?

i think a lot of times the fairly new grad have a easier time coping with the cpne than the lvn's with a lot of experience. i think the trick here is forgetting the way you do things and start doing it like they want it. i have worked in a variety of settings hospital and ltc. however, the majority of my time has been with alzheimer's/dementia and psych. i have found that i have a hard time communicating with patients unless they have some marbles loose up stairs. i hope this does not fail me when my cpne comes up...
