Just wondering if anyone went to the open house on Tuesday at Thomasville Medical Center and how it went? What did you hear? Do they have a lot of openings?
I tried going but didn't get the news in time to go. I wouldn't have made it (I'm from IA).
Anyways, how is New Grad hiring there in NC now? It was bombarded when I tried back in March. Waiting until August to try again. No luck yet in this state.
I will have to disagree with ncsportsfan. I attended the open house at FMC as well. Yes, there were HUNDREDS of applicants there, but there were a LOT of applicants who will not graduate until May or December 2010. Also, there were applicants there who were simply trying to join SNAPS. That being said I will have to say that you MUST stand out... on your resume. There are so many people there and sometimes the managers just throw your resume in a big pile. I am very fortunate that mine was picked for the ED and the ICU. I interviewed at both and just accepted a spot for their ED! I passed the NCLEX last week and am on cloud 9... my point is, Becky8, don't give up because there are 300 people there... just be confident, take LOTS of resumes.. hand them out and wait. It can't hurt!
UPDATE: Well, I have been working in another hospital but it has not been a good fit for me. So I decided to out-of-the-blue apply at TMC again and guess what? I have an interview tomorrow at 2pm! It's with the Nurse Recruiter of TMC and also with the Nurse Manager in the Womens & Children Services. I'm going to see what they have to offer but since I'm already working I'm not going to get my hopes up too high, but still...I hope I get it since this is where I originally wanted to work.

UPDATE: I GOT THE JOB!!! It was not in Women & Children's though, it was in Med/Surg, but it's better pay, benefits are a little cheaper, and it's closer to home. I am looking forward to starting my new job!
I know there is another open house in March where I work, when I get more details I will try to post it here. Good luck to all of you!
I went to the Open House for Novant - Forsyth Medical Center in December. It was my first one that the nurse managers and unit directors were there. I think it was the most depressing thing for a new grad. There were about 350 students/new grads there. How anyone managed to get an interview I have no idea. I think those who did preceptorships and clinicals at FMC where given priority. The lines were ridiculous for the ICU's, L&D, and ED. I just don't know how you make yourself stand out if you don't have any experience. They are having another one in March. If anyone goes I suggest you bring resumes and cover letters specific to each floor you have interest in, and figure out how you are going to make yourself stand out when you meet the manager. Some managers scheduled interviews on the spot.
I just oriented along with one of the New Grads who did attend the March one and she said was one of the over 350 applicants at the open house. She got hired because she worked as a CNA on the pulmonary unit and they liked her so much as a CNA that they said they would hire her when she got her RN. So that seemed to help.
For those who attended a new grad orientation at Forsyth Hospital/Novant, how long after you attended the orientation were you called for an interview? I attended orientation 3 weeks ago, and we were told interviews would take place and then all jobs would be offered Dec 1 and we would have until Dec 10 to accept or decline. I had a couple of nurse managers star my resume, but I have yet to be called to schedule an interview. There were also very few jobs availabe this time. Most sections said they did not have any openings, but would keep our resume on file. Overall it was a very disheartening experience!

Thanks for your reply. That is exactly what I was afraid might happen. It definitely would be uncomfortable to be with so many people searching for a job. Guess I will let this opportunity go by. Thanks again and the best of luck to you!
