New Grad Jobs in Charlotte
Hmm... well, I just passed the boards and even THAT doesn't seem to matter when it comes to hiring. I keep getting the same response, and that is, recruiters are NOW focused ONLY on hiring May 2010 graduates (I graduated in Dec). Not exactly sure why a recruiter would pass up a licensed new grad over an unlicensed 'future' new grad?! I hope that the summer months will provide a different response, before they start focusing ONLY on Dec 2010 graduates. It's very discouraging knowing that I spent five long years in school and almost $50k in loans for... nothing?!?! I know that persistance is the key and my only option at this point; as well as getting a job outside of nursing for the time being.

I wouldn't go so far as to say NC is the "worst" state to find a job, but it is definitely up there. And stating that "thousands" of nursing new grads are moving here from all over the country is a bit dramatic. I would be more inclined to predict that most nurses who have recently moved here, have done so because of their spouse's job. I'm a new grad who recently relocated here for the same reason, and over the last few months I've met at least a dozen other wives with the same story. Teachers and nurses have it rough in NC; however, for those with careers like my husband's, it's almost too easy to find a job. Tara: if you're looking for states employing new grads: San Antonio, TX., New York, and Arizona seem to have opening. Several of my classmates who graduated this past December have had much luck in these states.

Well, I'm also not a local, so Queens or Presby's SON means nothing to me. My knowledge of any of the nursing schools in NC is zilch... so I could have misunderstood as well. She definitely said internal and external... so I just attributed that to how it is in MI.

I received the same call from a Presby recruiter in December, however, my interpretation of the message was quite different. The recruiter simply stated that their policy is to hire "internally" first and IF there are positions still available, they will conduct interviews with external candidates. Internal- meaning those affiliated/currently employed with Presby (i.e. NAs, Techs, Clerks, LPN/LVNs, etc.). The recuiter made sure to point out that they had an abundance of "internal candidates"... however, she stated they may interview a few external candidates as well. I'm not sure if this is what the recuiter told you or if this is what she meant. It seems to make more sense as most hospitals have an obligation to interview current employees first. Atleast, this is how it's done at the hospital I worked at during nursing school in MI. Hope this helps! :)

Yes, I agree with you; however, my husband's job brought us back here (he lived here previously for the same job). Although I love the CLT area, it was not my first choice. Why would I willingly move to a state that starts nurses off at $10 less than my previous residence?! Especially with the amount of loans I've acquired over the years and no prospect of a job in the future...

Abishag- I'm in the same boat. I graduated a few weeks ago and relocated to Charlotte last week from another state. I have healthcare experience, but not from a NC healthcare system, which I fear puts me more at a disadvantage. I also received a call from presby stating that they were only hiring internally and would only consider interviewing external candidates if all the positions weren't filled. It's very discouraging and terrifying NOT knowing when or where I'm going to get a job!

NC Relocation
I'm relocating to NC in December upon graduation and it completely freaks me out that... 1.) there are even less new grad jobs available in NC and SC than in MI (where I currently reside) 2.) the pay difference is staggering; at the hospital I'm currently employed with as a nurse tech, new grads start at 26 or 30 (if you opt out of the insurance). I realize the cost of living is different, but with the massive school loans I will owe come December, I can't even begin to express my frustration.

Advice regarding inteview with Presbyterian?!
Hi, I'm a nursing student relocating to the Charlotte area upon graduation in Dec. Unfortunately, I missed the new grad deadline for CMC and can now only applying to Presby. I am unfamiliar with both and to the area; however, I did just receive a call back from Presbyterian. I was hoping someone could lend some advice or input regarding the job market in Charlotte? From what I've read in this forum and heard from outside sources, due to the influx of new grads, it's very difficult to secure a new grad position (especially for someone from out of state). Does anyone know how difficult is it to secure a job with Presby??? I'm awaiting a call back to set up an interview. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

BIG question about relocating right after graduation...
I'm currently in the same predicament. My fiance has a job lined up in NC once I graduate in December. Since I'm entering my last semester in nursing school in Michigan, the time to apply for a GN position is approaching. The deadline to apply in the Carolina Health System is October 15. I'm currently employed as nurse tech in MI, where I originally intended on working as a GN upon graduation. I've asked dozens of people for advice and was hoping I could receive additional help from here?! Through my research, I've learned that you can take the test in any state, regardless of which state you intend on working. So I can apply for an NC license and still take the test in MI. But I'm unsure if I should be applying for a GN position in NC, and then if selected, move there immediately after graduation and schedule to take the exam there??? OR, take the exam in MI for a license in NC... which means I would have to quit my job as a tech or take a step down as a nursing assistant (which means a big pay cut) here in MI until I pass and then move to NC and apply for a job then...??? Also, what if I apply in October and don't get offered a job initially in NC as a GN??? Either way, I have to have a job. It would be impossible for me financially to take a few months off. As you can see, i'm in the same situation; However, the only advice I can offer is that you can become licensed in TX and take the exam in TN. If you choose to to apply for a licensure in a different state from the one in which you are attending nursing school, contact the state board of nursing in the state in which you wish to become licensed to find out what their requirements are for licensure.
