Oooohhhh, Now I feel cosmopoliten, do you ALL wear scrubs?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Heya!!, wow, Im a british male student nurse, and firstly,

hi!

secondly do all nurse in the US, austraila, everywhere infact wear scrubs? I dont, I wish I did, "surgical blues" (scrubs) are so comfortable, just like pyjamas! :)

Oh and what does LPN, RN stand for? (I gather, nursing positions)

We have Registered Nurse (RN)thats a normal nurse nurse,

Enrolled nurses (EN) Very rare now, kinda a NA/RN hybrid in the 70's and Health care Assisstants / Nursing Auxileries / Nursing assisstants (HCA/NA)

Thanx!!

When I worked at an inpatient hospice unit, we wore (nice) street clothes. I prefer scrubs, because you don't have to think about what to wear.

I wish hospitals and other facilities would not permit their housekeeping staff to wear scrubs. It's hard to tell the janitors from the nurses. I think that that is what the hospitals intend! Makes it look like there are more nurses on duty that there really are.

A couple weeks ago, I entered an animal grooming business, and saw that all the dog bathers were wearing scrubs!

Seems that everybody wants to get into the act.

Karen, curious what do you think of Beverly Malone? She is still the head of the RNC then?

Britstudent, a dutch Media star....just the thought :roll

Where in the states did you spend time?

Your tunic uniforms are lovely and so "professional appearing"! OOPS, bad word! We don't want to look"too" good. Our PJ's will do.

Since my tastes are for functional and pedestrian, i go for solid colors...Scrubs. Out of respect for the people that are around me, I want them to know that my clothing is clean by just looking at me. Not trying to hide anything. Everyone has a different body shape, but not all are accepted by western culture. We hate you if you appear over-weight.

If I was in the hospital and my nurse came up to me in a. street clothes or b. clean solid scrubs...I'd have more trust up front for clean scrubs. The is a RN who wears neat street clothes and is an excellent RN, so it isn't a standard. My skin perfusion shows a pleasant appearance with solid colors. I'm sorry :-(

hey. I'm a nurse prescriber and they go overboard about writing legible scripts...........so keep trying!!

Beverly Malone....not sure what I think about her. heard her talk at the nurse practitioner conference last sept. was a little like - have script, insert nurse group name! not sure I like being referred to as the lunatic fringe of nursing!! she is costing the RCN a fortune, we pay her a salary and on top of that (if my understanding is correct) we pay her accomodation and flights home. she is doing alot of talking and supposed to be working with the gov to get us a decent pay rise but nothing yet. so still not sure what I think of her. as they say, she can talk the talk but yet to see her walk the walk!!!

Karen

Karen. Do I have to point out to you that nobodys has said walk the walk since the 80's?:roll

Karen

Britstudent, you were an hour north of where I live. By the way it is spelled M-i-c-h-i-g-a-n! :D Now the big question. Did you have the grand opportunity of experiencing lake effect snow? Once upon a time I was going to work in the neuro ICU at Blodgett hospital, now Spectrum Health, but decided I just did not want to deal with the winter driving and declined the job. So what brought you to the great white north? How long ago where you here?

Karen, I believe you are experiencing the same thing with Beverly Malone that American Nurses experienced when she was head of the ANA. If I recall correctly it was under her that the ANA started the labor arm of the association. The United American Nurses, problem was this. It is a labor association that is connected to an association that has nurses that are management nurses, and also nurses that work with the American Hospital Association. The AHA is the one who has come up with all the grand plans of having aides do tasks that were also the province of Nurses, like IV insertion, dropping NG's, inserting foley's etc... Many people, not all, but many, feel there is a definate conflict of interest there. Plus most southern and western state association were not keen on having to have a labor arm to their association in states that have traditionally been hostile to labor unions, so the solution was to put in a work place advocacy program in those states. This program has no teeth, and is basicly ineffective. I may wrong but I believe she was the head of the ANA when California disaffliated from the ANA. If she wasn't then it was around the same time frame. California left the association because they felt the ANA was not addressing the real problems, and that they were not addressing the actual needs of the bedside nurse. I don't understand why the RNC would pay for her flights home? Or other perks. She opted to take a job there, if she wants to come home it should be on her dime. She's been there about 2 years right? I recall at the time I was corresponding with someone involved with Unison and he emailed wondering what she had accomplished here. While she has an impressive resume, I just don't recall her leading the ANA as a group that most nurses here felt was effective to what was happening to us at the bedside. At the time I was quite shocked that an American nurse was hired to lead British nurses, and I was given to understand she did not take a RN license in Britian. Though that may have changed. I know that if the shoe was on the other foot, I would not be happy with the situation. Now if there were dynamic results happening, that may be one thing, but if there are not I'd vote her out.
