Ontario Second-Entry Nursing (2015)

I know it's early, but let's get a thread going. 2015-hopefuls, share your thoughts, concerns, questions, and experiences here!

Anyone going to York know why it says under "Conditions of Admissions" in my mail package it says "your offer of admission is contingent on your submission of proof of all degrees/diplomas earned. Please submit official transcrpits which show degrees and/or driplomas earned"?? I finished my third year at Brock this year but did not get a degree. Is this sentence just saying that IF you did get a degree you need to submit it? No where on OUAC or MyFile does is say that I had been given a conditional offer. Thanks!

I think they probably just want your transcript with your final marks. Call admissions and make sure.

York responded two days ago. I was reviewed as - prereq's incomplete... Not sure how they are incomplete if I have all my prereqs completed and in good standing.

Most likely one of your pre-reqs wasn't considered equivalent. If one of them was taken online that might be the one. If you plan to apply again next year it'd be worth trying to call and find out which pre-req was the problem. Whatever you decide, I wish you good luck on your way!

Not good. As I'm sure you will see if you browse through the site and talk with any of the long time members of allnurses, the whole "nursing shortage" seems to have been a bit of a lie that was sold to us.

I am one of the few people in my graduating class who has a job, and most of them got theirs from pregrad. That said, I don't know what the market will be like in 2-3 years.

What I learned (and was encouraged to do by the members of AN) was to apply to everything. You can't be super picky as a new grad with no experience. So I applied to any job that was within an hour commute of me, especially in smaller town, and on floors that maybe weren't what I REALLY wanted to do.

A lot of my peers haven't quite realized how tough the market is yet and are getting disheartened because they have applied for 10 jobs and haven't heard anything back. I applied for over 70 I believe, and I got 3 interviews from that and then 3 job offers.

Do well in school, and take some extra classes if you can. I took an arrhythmias course and my ACLS during pregrad and it definitely gave me a bit of an edge. Also make sure you develop good relationships with clinical instructors if you can. They will be the best references you can have (and you will need a few after graduating).

If you don't mind sharing, I am curious as to whether any of the job offers you received were in acute care?

I'm still pending for McMaster... Anyone else in the same boat?

So after being "rejected" by UofT earlier this month, I received a surprising email today where they waitlisted me and put me in the first group. I already have accepted an offer from Nipissing and really want to go there, but for anyone who received a rejection on June 8th, it may have been error.

If you don't mind me asking, how do you know which group you have been put in for the waitlist?

"You have been placed in the first group of the BScN waitlist. Should there is any spot, candidates in this group will be considered first. You will be immediately contacted by the Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing if a vacancy in the program becomes available.

It is difficult for us to predict how many candidates will be admitted from the wait list at this time. In previous years, the number of admitted students from the wait list could range from a few to over 20. We are monitoring our acceptance rate closely. If spots are available, waitlisted candidates will be notified by Sept 4."

I was up until this afternoon. It now says, not to much surprise at this point, denied.

I will list the jobs I was offered in order that they happened :)

First I was offered a casual position with temporary full time on a medical telemetry unit. However this was quite far from where I live and I would have had to move for it.

Then I was offered a one year temporary full time position on a medical floor that was a commutable distance from where I live in a smaller town.

Finally I was offered a new graduate job in a cardiac ICU/step down unit which I have accepted and will be starting very soon.

The best thing to try and do is get a job on your pregrad unit! But that doesn't always work out.
