Ontario Second Entry Nursing Fall 2021

Published

Hey everyone!

I haven't seen a post for Fall 2021 yet so here it is!

My choices are:

1. UofT

2. McMaster

3. Nipissing SPP

I started my OUAC application in November and now trying to work on the supplemental packages. My CASPer Test is on January 12, 2021.

I need to take Anatomy and Physio course(s) however, I'm having a hard time figuring out what would satisfy the requirements from all three universities. My options so far are:

1. Take CBLG 101 in Winter and CBLG 111 in Spring at Ryerson. However final grade will be in June; hoping that's fine.  This satisfies all 3 unis

2. Take SCS 2159 in Winter from UofT which is enough for UofT and McMaster but not for Nipissing. I have to take an Anatomy course just for Nip.

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education from back home, been working as an RECE in Toronto the last 8 years, have a Diploma in Nonprofit Management at Ryerson. My cGPA is 3.55 which I'm worried about. Lots of extra curricular activities from university and volunteering here in Toronto.  I still have to compute the GPA for the last two years.

I requested WES to send my transcripts to Nip and McMaster and asked my old uni to send to UofT.

It's been an expensive application so far; really hoping I get in! Looking forward to chatting with you all and sharing our experiences.

Ah gotcha! Best of luck with your apps! The Nipissing SPP is super intriguing, I feel like it's hard to find any info on it!

I am a current Nipissing SPP student so if you have any questions let me know!  I remember how helpful these forums were last year and I am happy to pay it forward!

Congratulations on your acceptance! If you don't mind sharing, what was your GPA like?

Thank you! I attended university a *long* time ago, LOL! I didn't calculate my GPA (it's on a different scale) but I was generally an "A" student. Sorry I'm not more helpful there!

Are you enjoying it? I only applied to York for commuting reasons, but I remember looking at Nipissing and I was so curious about the program.

Yes, it's really great.  Such a supportive environment.  We get way more clinical opportunity and hands on learning than other programs.

Hi! I was wondering if you remember what your GPA was when you got accepted if you don't mind sharing. I was also wondering what your home base is and how you are finding clinical placements? I know you started last semester, did you feel thrown in at all?

I think my GPA was in the 3.7-3.8 range.  But  the interview is usually heavily weighted.  Are they doing interviews this year?  They cancelled them for us last year, and that was really nerve-racking!  My home base is Sick Kids and it has been great so far.  You do naturally feel a little "thrown in" because you go from not knowing anything to working in a pretty acute environment really fast, but the faculty and preceptors are so supportive.  You definitely get to work at your own pace and at your own comfort level.  You can shadow your preceptor until you are comfortable, and then you start with simple things like doing vitals, head to toe and focussed assessments, and communication with patients.  It really helps with your soft skills because it is really hard to teach communication theoretically!  Every week you have debriefs and reflection classes where you can talk about your experiences and get support from the faculty and your other classmates.

We don't have any interviews, personal statements or references this year so its weighted between the CASPer and GPA (very stressful LOL). Was that your cGPA or for your top 10 full courses if you remember.

Its nice to hear that about the program, although there is such little info available, I have heard great things about it. Was your placement last semester a virtual one or a in person placement? I heard some students did them virtually. I love how supportive it sounds and that its very focused on you developing your skills.

Oh wow, that is stressful!  I'm pretty sure that was top 10 GPA.  We all had to do virtual placement last semester which was really disappointing, but I actually learned a lot, and got to practice assessment skills and vital signs on my family members.  It was really helpful for finally getting into placement this semester!  There is a big emphasis on critical thinking skills, so that is really helpful in being able to learn in a self-directed manner.

Hey! I wanted to respond to this again because York did send me a letter through MyFile asking me to upload proof of enrollment in an anatomy course. Strange because I'm enrolled at york, and they noted that in the comments, but I decided to upload it anyway just so all of my boxes were checked! I just saved a PDF of my course grades and it showed my course in progress as well.

Hi, I was wondering if on MyFile under supporting documents if it just shows the Casper test for you as well? Was wondering if other documents should be in that section?

I just want to make sure everything is updated.

Thank you !

It shows my two postsecondary school transcripts, CASPer and the anatomy course that I'm currently taking all as "received" now.

It doesn't show it for me and I am wondering if its because I am currently a yorku student ?

If anyone knows please let me know.

I am missing my Anatomy course pre req under my MyFile. I did not realize that was suppose to be there. Mine only shows my CASPer as being received as well as my post secondary transcripts.
