Ontario Second Entry Nursing Fall 2021

Published

Hey everyone!

I haven't seen a post for Fall 2021 yet so here it is!

My choices are:

1. UofT

2. McMaster

3. Nipissing SPP

I started my OUAC application in November and now trying to work on the supplemental packages. My CASPer Test is on January 12, 2021.

I need to take Anatomy and Physio course(s) however, I'm having a hard time figuring out what would satisfy the requirements from all three universities. My options so far are:

1. Take CBLG 101 in Winter and CBLG 111 in Spring at Ryerson. However final grade will be in June; hoping that's fine.  This satisfies all 3 unis

2. Take SCS 2159 in Winter from UofT which is enough for UofT and McMaster but not for Nipissing. I have to take an Anatomy course just for Nip.

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education from back home, been working as an RECE in Toronto the last 8 years, have a Diploma in Nonprofit Management at Ryerson. My cGPA is 3.55 which I'm worried about. Lots of extra curricular activities from university and volunteering here in Toronto.  I still have to compute the GPA for the last two years.

I requested WES to send my transcripts to Nip and McMaster and asked my old uni to send to UofT.

It's been an expensive application so far; really hoping I get in! Looking forward to chatting with you all and sharing our experiences.

Has anyone heard back from McMaster yet??? Mans stressing out here LOL

Hi,

I said this because just a couple comments above mine somebody mentioned that there application said “Under consideration” since March before they were accepted this week. That just had me a little confused due to mine saying what you said which is “No decision made yet” under Decision.

Thanks,

Rachel

Yes you're correct. That is what I stated above, so far everyone who was accepted that posted on here stated their status changed. In your case, they may not have started looking at your application yet. It took mine forever to change to under consideration and now it's been like that for a month. So I have no idea how the next weeks will play out but good luck either way. The anticipation is stressing me out.

Hi all!

I just cancelled my offer to York's Second Entry Nursing Program and accepted my offer to Nipissing's SPP! Still waiting on an offer to UofT, but in case that doesn't come through, I am excited to begin this new journey with all those who have accepted their offers to Nipissing.

I'm wondering if it's too early to start a FB group for the SPP students starting in Fall 2021? Or, if there is one that already exists -- I would greatly appreciate if someone can send the link my way.

I’ve also accepted nipissing but still waiting to hear from UofT!! I don’t believe anyone’s started a FB group yet but if you do start one please let me know.

Hi there! happy to see I am not alone!
This was not an easy decision to make as I have already made friends with some lovely people who have accepted their offers to York. However, I had to be realistic with myself and so the following is my though process behind the decision to choose Nipissing over York.

1. Commute: I attended York for my undergrad and the commute absolutely drained me. I live in Toronto's east end and having to commute all the way up to York definitely had a negative impact on my academic performance. Not sure how everything is working during COVID, however, I don't want to take that chance for when classes go back to in-person learning. Nursing school demands a lot and I don't want to have to commute unnecessarily if there are options dt.

2. Strikes: I experienced 2 strikes at York and I am in no position to allow for another strike to disrupt me during nursing school. Just today, I read a post that York Members have approved a provisional strike timeline. It's only a matter of time. I have attached the post so that you can read it.

3. Placements: Placements at York aren't the best, and from what I have heard, you literally have to insist for placement coordinators to give you the placement you want. York placements seem to be in hospitals/organizations in the GTA such as Mackenzie health, Brampton Civic Hospital. I don't want to spend too much time commuting to my placements. I also want to work DT so these hospitals do not suit my preferences.

Also, downtown hospitals give priority firstly to UofT students, so they will always get their placement in organizations such as UHN etc. Nipissing students will also get placements at dt hospitals/organizations (UHN, SickKids, TPH).

Placements at Nipissing are 1:1 and so you won't have to share your learning experience with other students. Also, Nipissing offers more placement hours than any other nursing program. Practical experience is what gets you hired at the end of the day, not the name of the university.

4. Learning Style: Nipissing's program is not traditional in comparison to other university nursing programs. I love that they emphasize on self-reflection because I think that this components is often overlooked by student nurses. Self-reflection doesn't come naturally to everyone and is a skill that is essential for every nurse. So I love that they have heavily incorporated it into their program. It's definitely a skill that I want to further nurture and develop. Furthermore, after a lot of self-reflection (LOL) I have come to the conclusion that I am a self-driven learner and therefore will be a great fit for the program. My time-management skills need some work but I am hopeful that by placing myself in a learning environment that hinges on it, I will force myself to adapt/ adopt better mechanisms to improve this skill.

Obviously there are disadvantages to this program, just like any other. But, they are up to the interpretation of the individual. What works for me may not work for someone else and vice versa. I'm just happy to have been accepted as I am passionate about health and healthcare.

Also, I have been chatting with a current SPP student who has given me loads of information regarding the program structure. They helped immensely in helping me formulate my decision.

Side note: If there is anyone who would like to clarify/correct whatever I've written down, please feel free to. This is my personal thought process, and may not be applicable to everyone.

Hi,

Does anyone know if UofT sends out their rejections earlier than June 30th or is it all at one time (ie. The last day to hear back). As well does anyone know of them having a wait-list?

If anyone has any insights, please let me know :).

Thanks,

I'm planning on accepting Queen's, but I'm still waiting to hear back from some schools!

Hey! When does your offer expire? Just wanted to get a feel for next round for waitlist

Wow! Thank you so much for this insight! I hadn't really considered the possibility of strikes, so this is good to know. I also would have a long commute to York - but I just figure that I may not have to go on campus everyday due to online learning. I guess we really don't know at this point. I really like how Nipissing has a lot more placement hours but I think I am just mostly worried about the lack of structured classes. I did my undergrad at UofT so maybe I am just used to a lot of science-based courses so I am trying to figure out if Nipissing's learning style suits me.

Hi guys! I have a question. Do nursing jobs always require references from previous employers?

I don’t think so? My one friend who never had a job was able to get hired on by public health right after passing her NCLEX. If you’ve done volunteer work you could always put a reference for that if an employer wants some form of references
