Ontario Second Entry Nursing Fall 2020

World Canada CA Programs

Updated:   Published

Hey, I used to creep these forums for the past few years and they helped affirm my decision to apply to nursing school for Fall 2020. I didn't see one started for next year so I thought, why not start one?

I graduated a while back so I'm a bit older, but my top three choices are:

1. Queen's

2. McMaster

3. York

4. Humber-UNB

Do you mind sharing your GPA/extracurriculars?

Of course not.

My GPA for the last 10.0 credits is 3.5, however my GPA in the last 5.0 is around 3.6.

As for my extracurriculars, around 5 years ago I did concert management for around a year. 3 years ago I started volunteering in the cardiology clinic at my hospital, and I did that until COVID-19 hit. At the same time I did that volunteering I was a clinical research intern at the ICU, I did that for around 1.5 years. I was aiming to become a physician assistant at one point, so I did an observership with a PA I met while volunteering. Around one year ago I started doing a fundraiser for cancer in a different hospital. All of these things ended when COVID-19 hit. So I got a job as a health care screener to help out with the COVID-19 situation.

I also finished an honours bachelor of science at UofT last year (2015-2020). The extra year was because my grades were not so good in the first few years of my education. So I took a step backwards, and took a few less courses a year. And that's how I made time for my extracurriculars.

Hey when did you submit your personal statement?

I never actually got to, I was planning on doing that. I was busy studying for the CASPER test and dealing with a few other personal issues. It also says that the personal statement is optional, so that may be the reason why they accepted me despite not having submitted it yet.

Has anyone recieved an acceptance to uottawa?

Hello, I'm applying to McMaster's Nursing program and on Mosaic (the website they use in order to process applications) they require a supplemental application, but when I press on the link it just directs me to this link:

https://nursing.mcmaster.ca/prospective-students/admission#casper

Anyone else encountered this problem? I am now looking at the link itself and I noticed the #casper... is it referring to the CASPER test?

I've been having this same issue, and what I think we're required to do is scroll down to "BScN accelerated stream", click "Application process" and download and email the prerequisite form.

Hi everyone! I have applied to Nipissing for their second entry program and I was wondering if anyone in forum got accepted chose Nipissing for their 2020 fall semester. I was just curious to know how the experience has been this far since I am aware it is not like the typical nursing program and style of learning.

Edit: wrong post ??‍♀️

Anyone here in Queen’s Nursing? I got accepted for 2021, and would love to get any insight on the program.

Ahh perfect!

moreso, how do you like the program? What’s your typical schedule? Do you have clinicals on weekends? And just general info about the program:)

I like the program so far! It's super super super busy and obviously things are different with COVID so I'm not sure how it compares to "normal". Because of COVID we have smaller clinical groups and lab groups which is really nice, but it does mean we have clinical shifts on Sundays to spread our groups out enough (it alternates Sunday/Monday this term). We've been able to do more in person stuff than some programs I think? But our academic classes have been online. Both terms Thursday has been the heaviest day in terms of class schedule, not sure if that's a general thing or just a coincidence. The biggest downside is that to protect our clinical patients we can't leave Kingston and can't have contact from people outside of the city (eg family, partners) - it's been really hard to not have access to my support system. Then again, I totally understand why that is the way it is and would never want to risk the health of our patients esp because this placement for most of us is working with older adults (eg geriatric rehab, palliative care). And that may change for next year, who knows?

Ultimately I picked Queens because it has more placements than most accelerated programs, and clinical experience is what will get you jobs after graduation!

If you have any other questions feel free to ask!

This is a great idea! I'd love to hear from people who are attending York's 2nd entry program.

Wow thank you for such a comprehensive answer! This sounds great! Definitely apprehensive bc my bf lives in Toronto so my mental health will prob suffer lmao! How do they monitor if you leave or not? And can your family visit you in kingston? I’m guessing no?

They can visit but you can't have close contact (eg have to have masks, be physically distanced, be outside). So it hasn't really been worth it to have my fiancé drive down. Monitoring is via self report basically - you have to fill out online checks any day you have in person activity on campus that verifies you're not a risk and there's a screening tool at clinical too. If there's an emergency or something else comes up you just let the school know. At clinical it means you go on work isolation - you can still go but you have to eat lunch alone, basically. If you were to falsely answer the screening and got caught you could potentially get kicked out of the program.

At the end of the day it's been the biggest stressor for me personally for sure, BUT we're all in the same boat so we support each other and honestly we don't have time to take days off anyway so if I focus on school it's not so bad. I'm really really hopeful that as vaccinations become more common that rule gets relaxed!
