Ontario- HOAE results? 'Normalized' score?

Just wondering if anyone else has recently taken the HOAE? I got my results, but I am wondering what the 'normalized score' is all about? I am willing to share my scores if anyone is interested in comparing their results. Might give us an idea of what the average score was like, or what the deal is with the 'normalized' value. It's frustrating to sit and wait around during the college strike... I personally haven't received any news on my application at all since I got my HOAE scores. I applied to both Pre-Health and RPN. Looking online, it doesn't even seem like they have all my prerequisite grades recorded.

Well...as they say, patience is a virtue. Although I don't recall anyone ever accusing me of being 'virtuous' before. :D

Just anxious to get started, like everyone else!

I took the HOAE last July 13, 2011. For the normalized score, let's say it says on your result, 38.41 that means that you are on the 38th percentile. So basically 38/100 to make it simple.

I'll share you my results.

Academic Aptitude 32

Information in Natural Sciences 34

Reading Comprehension 27

Spelling 38

Vocational Adjustment Index 69

How about yours?

The academic aptitude test was a little confusing.

There was this part where you have to pick a word that does not coincide with the other words. Those words were honestly out of this world. I never knew you would use words like "ebb" in practical nursing.

So how did you do?

On top of that, I have 84.5% average in high school and I don't know if that's enough for that program.

See, this normalized thing still doesn't make any sense. I thought it was a percentile thing too, but it can't be- here are my scores;

Academic Aptitude- 69/75 (104.07)

Information in Natural Sciences- 57/60 (85.97)

Reading Comprehension- 31/35 (46.75)

Spelling- 44/45 (66.36)

Vocational Adjustment Index- 83/90 (125.18)

I put my 'naturalized' scores in the brackets. You see what I mean? I can't figure out what they mean. They can't possibly be percentiles- how could I have scored better than 125.18 of the testers?? A percentile is always out of 100. Like, if you are on the 38th percentile, it means that you scored higher than 38% of the testers. It must mean something else in this case.

I'm sure your HS average is enough- 84.5% is great! I tanked in high school so I did some academic upgrading courses to pull them up. I don't know if that will do the trick or not, though.

Thanks for sharing your results. I hope we both get where we want to go! :)

Yeah, that was confusing as well. Mine had "104% on the Vocational Adjustment" part and it did not make sense.

Your HOAE results were really high, how did you get that? Did you use any material to study?

And what was your high school mark?

I think you will get in with your high HOAE results!

So I tried calculating what I have so far.

(high school average) x .50 (since 50 percent is high school marks and the other 50 is HOAE)

=84.5 x .50 = 42.25

=65.57 (HOAE) x .50 = 32.79

the total comes to 75.04

I'm totally screwed since what I got is mediocre.

Thanks! I did the test on the same day as you- I think I was the first one to leave, so thanks for not throwing anything at me. :lol2: I was kind of rushing because I knew the sections were timed, and I was panicking that I wouldn't get finished! :) I can hardly remember any of the questions at all. I didn't really use any study materials specific to the test- but like I said, I had done some academic upgrading just prior to writing the test, so I guess I just had it fresh in my mind. And I'm one of those people that are comfortable with tests, I guess. My high school marks were honestly dismal- I think I had a whopping 60% average on the four admitting courses (English, math, bio, chem). I took ACE courses from Mohawk to upgrade all four of them, but there was a problem with the math so it didn't count. I ended up with a 94% in English, 97% in chemistry and 98% in biology (I was a bit more motivated than I was back in '95- lol!) If I use the same calculation as you did, I end up with... let's see...

If I use my gr. 12 math mark which was 60%, and the grades from my ACE courses, then my HS average works out to 87%.

87 x .5 = 43.5

93 x .5 = 46.5

That works out to 90. Assuming of course that each of the sections on the HOAE are worth the same- which they might not be. Who knows?

It's all speculation, unfortunately... I thought I remembered reading that the expectation on the high school grades was that you get at least 75% in all of them- which puts me out of the running because of my grade 12 math, even with all the other scores. That would be a bit of a slap in the face, I'm not gonna lie. It would sting. :) But like I said, I have no idea how they are weighting everything... all the sections on the HOAE might not be worth the same, or they may be factoring in the time you took to write them- they made sure to mention that each section was timed, so that might come into it. This is part of the reason I was wondering about the initial question of the 'naturalized' scores.

So I think it boils down to this- you're not any more screwed than I am, in my opinion! Your HOAE score might be better than you think, and my screw-up with my ACE math course might cost me my acceptance...

I HATE WAITING!!! lol!

Best of luck, anyway... I hope we both get in!

I HATE WAITING AS WELL.

they said acceptances will be October, assuming the strike will be done that time.

So if ever I don`t get in for the Practical Nursing program, how do I register for the ACE program? I currently live in Toronto by the way. I think it's through distance learning so I don't have to travel back and forth to Hamilton right? And also, how did you get those 97's and 98's? That's amazing!

Who said the acceptances would be out in October? Everyone I've tried to contact is on strike. :icon_roll If it's dependent on the resolution of the strike... well, I won't be holding my breath for that!

You can check out the Mohawk Continuing Education catalog online- they probably have it at other colleges too, I just never looked. They have the courses in distance format, and apparently in-class as well. Just FYI- the admissions advisor did mention to me (after I took them, of course) that they prefer the in-class delivery over distance, because of the 'hands-on' nature of the health sciences programs. But I know for a fact that other people have used the ACE distance programs for entry. The potential problem right now, is, again, the strike. I was looking today, and it looks like they have suspended the distance ed courses... or else they're all just full. I'm not sure.

As far as the grades- I just really worked hard, and checked and double-checked my answers. Distance education isn't for everyone, though... it was really difficult to get the hang of some of the concepts without the immediate feedback of having a live teacher on hand. Not that they're difficult to get hold of- they're not, and they are great about helping you- but emailing back and forth takes up time, and it's harder to make your questions clear enough to get the answer you need.

I've heard of people taking courses online through ILC (Independent Learning Center) too- it's government-run and the courses are supposed to be acceptable for this purpose. I've never taken one there, though. Just something to look into... might be easier to go through them rather than something that's affiliated with the colleges when they're having all these issues.
