Online Science Courses

Nursing Students Online Learning

Published

Hi all,

I thought that maybe it would be good to have a sticky for online science courses.

I am currently looking for an online/distance learning-- 4-- credit microbiology course. Of course it has to have a lab.

I know that both ccconline and Rio Salado offer these courses. Anyone have experience with either one of these in regards to microbiology, i.e. testing, level of difficulty, user friendly technology. I know from experience with Rio that the exams are proctored but how does ccconline deliver their exams?

If you have a link or resources to other colleges offering sciences--please post them here.

I am taking a 3 credit Microbiology course online through Brigham Young University. I got approval from my advisor at Excelsior and was told that this course satisfies the micro requirement.....

Hi,

I am going through Excelsior as well. Can you not clep out of some of the prereq's? I am just getting started on the ones that I have left.. I have most of the prereqs.

Regarding sjvconline, are all the tests online or do you have to go to a testing center?? You stated that the class intensity varies by instructor, are you willing to share the names of some good a&p and Micro teachers? Oh,, and by pricey, just how pricey? I couldn't get that info on their website. Do I also understand correctly that you don't actually have to enroll into any of their programs and can just take the class you want without hassle? What about transcripts....I know it's alot of questions, but they interested me and its the weekend and couldn't get anyone to answer me at the school. You can PM if you wish. Thanx

Hi Everyone,

I am in the same boat as all of you. I have taken micro and chemistry online. I took micro through ccconline and highly recommend it. I got the lab kit from at home science and borrowed a microscope. As long as you do the work and keep up you will do ok. The instructor was very nice and very good for online.

I took chemistry through the iowa community college consortium (someone posted a link somewhere on this thread) with Dr. Klepper. And he is very good. Again, if you do the work and keep up you can do well. I am taking the second chemistry class this spring again with Dr. Klepper.

I live in California and had applied to a new pilot nursing program right here in my town. I was very excited, I have a very high gpa. I just got my letter saying that I did not make it past the evaluation because of my online microbiology. they are very strict here in california and I am very frustrated. all of the community college rn programs are so impacted, like 300 people applying for every 50 spots. I feel like I will never get in for three years. I've beenn accepted to an out of state accelerated BSN but it is very expensive and I can't actually imagine moving accross the country. Its stressing me out really. I think it is interesting that the BSN programs will take the online classes but the stupid Junior college programs won't. Sorry for venting but I've been very frustrated. Any advice is welcomed.

Try petioning them again. Bring in your syllabus and lab guide, along withyour lab notebook showing how you completed the experiments. Get a letter from your instructor. I would not throw in the towel yet. You might be able to convince them to accept it, or to let you take an exam.

Good luck!

How is testing done? One of the online courses mentioned that tests are proctored (supervised)...? How is this done? This sounds silly, but; are webcams required? Does nothing prevent me from accessing my notes during an exam?

I just thought you guys should know that byu online micro is 369$

and ccconline is closer to 600$ from what i can tell from lookin at their web site micro is the last req i need ?

Some courses are open notebook. For you to look up all your info to check your answers -- well darn near impossible especially with Chem. The tests are on a timer from the time you sign in, so when time is up, it shuts off (you do get warnings as time counts down). Proctoring is done at a number of places. You can go to a library, a church, another school. Your school will tell you what is appropriate. They contact the proctor who gets a secret code to sign you in, then they actually proctor you.. No cheating allowed. HTH.

well, if you wanna transfer your micro, you should know that the BYU class is 3credit (no lab) and ccconline is a 4credit (with lab). I am also looking at byu, but that would mean I'd still have to take a lab elsewhere. Just so you know.... P.s I wish you success!! I have micro and one concepts exam left to sign up for the big test @ Excelsior.

Anyone know of a good online course in statistics?

Chem, A & P I & II and General Bio as well as other courses.

I highly recommend the Chem with Dr. Klepper -- totally suited to teaching in the distance format.

:balloons: Hi fotografe, I have a question about the labs and proctoring. I did see a note from you further on, where the lab exams are given in various places..Libraries, etc. You mention that the school finds the proctor for you. I just wanted to ensure that was correct because I was intereseted in taking some classes thru this college but did not want to have a big hassle finding proctors, ie...sometimes you have to get someone with a certian resume and they have to sign off on some paperwork and many people are reluctant to get involved in that. So the lab exam was arranged locally for you in your home town & they flew the proctor to the site?? Thankyou for your help. Oh, and can you recall how many lab exams for A&P 1?? I'm not worried about the material (already had it but its been 15 yrs), more worried about the hassle. Thanks again.:)

I am not sure, but I also checked into BYU. You will have to find your own lab and pay for it, probably at a local CC if the institution you're transferring credit to requires a lab component. The lab is not found for you. As for proctoring, there is a list of approved sites in your area. You contact the school when you are ready to test and the school sets up a test date and time at the site closest to you that you choose. Some sites charge a nominal fee for your to sit an exam at their site. It is pretty efficient, I have heard. So, in short, you need to know whether the school you are transferring credits to requires a lab. If it does, BYU may not be the best choice for you if you plan to do it all at a distance, or if you don't want to pay for a seperate lab. On the other hand, CCCOnline is very costly, but it includes a lab component and you do the labs in your own home. You should probably talk to your academic advisor at your home school to see what the micro requirements are.

The proctor you find yourself. I used the public library for one exam, and then had a professor from a university that my husband knows proctor me for the other. Basically they just make sure you are the person you say you are, and set you up on the computer with a code.

I think there were 3 or 4 exams for each course. I dont' think Chem required a proctor. Good luck.
