Online RN-BSN for recovering nurses

Published

Hello all,

I am a board ordered nurse involved in a recovery program. I am currently in school for my BSN online at Grand Canyon University. However, I was informed by the assistant dean of nursing there that I will not be allowed to continue because my license is restricted. This is extremely frustrating, because I only have 2 courses left to complete before I would be able to graduate. Apparently, there is no appeal process for this, and it looks like I am going to have to transfer to another program if I want to finish anytime soon. The issue is I am not sure what programs would accept a nurse with a restricted license. I've done a Google search and reached out to a few schools, but they said they would not accept me. I have straight As, and I really want to complete my BSN as soon as possible. So does anyone know any online RN-BSN programs that will accept a board ordered nurse on a monitoring program? Anything helps! Thanks!

Hey,

Just wanted to give you a status update. I haven't heard from a lot of places, but the ones I have heard from so far:

Central Michigan - the program director told me that they do allow you to complete the clinical requirements at your current place of work, so long as it isn't on the "same level"-I told her in detail that I work at an residential inpatient drug and alcohol treatment facility and I'm fairly certain she is confusing it with a traditional hospital.....so that one is maybe

Liberty - definitive "no"...but they did write..."Sadly, we do require applicants to hold a RN that is unrestricted/unencumbered." LOL

California State University - you wrote "in Diego Hills" in your post and I could not find any location other than "Dominguez Hills" for California State University. They informed me that they do not admit students from outside California (I am in Connecticut). So it looks like any Cal State School is a hard "no".

Arizona State University- I wrote them and they wrote me back to give them a call....still waiting to hear. Although the program requirements on the website state "current RN license in good standing with the state board of nursing"....so not too hopeful

Pacific College- I just got a text message from someone named Michelle in response to my email but it sounds more like a general follow up solicitation when you request info.....no answers yet from them

I put emails in to all the program directors at the online schools here in CT, but they all clearly state on their websites that restricted/encumbered licenses are a definite no.....so I'm not too hopeful.

Also.....FYI. I saw that Quinnipiac University is on your list. They are located here in Hamden, CT. They are very strict and insanely expensive. Let me know how you make out with them.

Still making my way down your list.....thanks again. Let me know how you are progressing.

Through my state board. I was board ordered to do the program, so that's what I am doing. I actually ended my search, however, because I figure it's better to just wait to finish at Grand Canyon since I only have 2 courses left, rather than spend a ton of time and money at another school.

I think that is wise. I had to take a year off then finish the last year of my DNP studies while in the program. Each of these situations (monitoring and school) are stressful on there own. Together they really stink. Just concentrate on getting out of this garbage one step at a time then reclaim your life when it’s done. I’m getting closer to the end and a new emotion is finally starting to arise in me. Hope!!! Hang in there!!!!

Here’s another one to try Kaiser University in Fort Lauderdale Florida. Just keep at it they all interpret the law differently. I’m a veteran of board sanctioned recovery myself from way back with damn near 20 years recovery it’s possible keep your chin up and keep pushing. Someone will have compassion. It’s not personal it’s out of fear they feel they are protecting their programs.

I am so sorry to hear this, perhaps show that you went through a program of some sorts also try applying to Capella RN to BSN online program. What is bad about this is that, they shouldn't have accepted you in the first place, it's wrong to tell you this before two class of being finished . That's messed up.

Hello. I am not sure where you live but Ohio University is where I am enrolled. They accept nurses who are in alternative to discipline programs. I am in KARE through Kentucky board Of nursing. The only issue would be they only except students located in certain areas. I can't remember all the different states they except but I know for sure Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana. I'm just not sure on what other states. Hopefully this helps him.
