Hello all,
I am a board ordered nurse involved in a recovery program. I am currently in school for my BSN online at Grand Canyon University. However, I was informed by the assistant dean of nursing there that I will not be allowed to continue because my license is restricted. This is extremely frustrating, because I only have 2 courses left to complete before I would be able to graduate. Apparently, there is no appeal process for this, and it looks like I am going to have to transfer to another program if I want to finish anytime soon. The issue is I am not sure what programs would accept a nurse with a restricted license. I've done a Google search and reached out to a few schools, but they said they would not accept me. I have straight As, and I really want to complete my BSN as soon as possible. So does anyone know any online RN-BSN programs that will accept a board ordered nurse on a monitoring program? Anything helps! Thanks!

That stinks. I did the last year of my DNP program while in monitoring but I guess I never had an official restriction on my license. That stinks. I’m sorry. These programs are asinine

Ugh yeah they really are. All about their reputation. Like I got a DUI 2 years ago and I'm the scum of the earth now even though I'm in full compliance with my program and a very good student.
That’s the same as me. I guess I got lucky. Wow I’m sorry

From a Christian college no less. Hmm... what about forgiveness and compassion?

I completed my RN-BSN through Chamberlain College of Nursing while in my monitoring program without any problems. Give them a call! Don’t give up. You are so close. Do not let the monitoring program hold you back from becoming a better nurse. You are worth it.

Thank you for the kind words! I contacted Chamberlain through a live chat and only asked if they would accept nurses with a restricted license and they said no, but I didn't get a chance to explain my situation so maybe if I do that they will consider me.

American brand Christianity lacks those things.

As a veteran of a recovery monitoring program who is in the process of applying to BSN programs almost everyone states they will not accept you unless you have an unrestricted license. These policies also state that if at any point after starting you license becomes restricted you will be dropped from the program. That being said I don't think you have a leg to stand on. How much time is left on your contract can you take a hiatus and finish when your license is no longer restricted.

I was intrigued by your post as I am in a similar situation and currently attempting to start an online RN to BSN program. I had a few questions. Does Chamberlain have required clinical hours as part of their online BSN program? Did you have any restrictions on your license through your state board of nursing (i.e. narcotics restriction, no solo practice, required practice monitor, etc) or were you in a diversion program that allowed you to keep an unrestricted license provided you complied with your terms (urine screens, meetings, etc)? Huge difference in terms of prerequisites to enter and complete an online BSN. Every program I have researched thus far clearly lists “current/valid unrestricted/unencumbered state RN license” as a prerequisite for admission, as the clinical requirements cannot be completed in any local healthcare setting with restrictions on your license.

I am in the state of CT and in a similar situation. I have not been able to apply to or find any online RN to BSN that will accept any RN with a “restricted/encumbered” license. I have been getting email responses from the program directors stating that the required clinical hours are the issue. My RCO (Reinstatement Consent Order) through the CT Department of Public Health prohibits me from working or functioning as a RN in any healthcare setting without a practice monitor who fills out monthly reports for the DPH. This is why all online RN to BSN programs with clinical hour requirements will not admit you to their program. I have been looking for programs with no clinical hour requirements but have yet to come across a single one. Let me know how your search goes.
